It's called Ivermectin, a broad-spectrum, anti-parasitic agent.
Some physicians around the world are using it to treat COVID-19 including Omaha doctor Louis Safranek.
"I typically use it in combination with other agents. But I do prescribe it for virtually all the patients who come to me, as part of a treatment regimen, which I think is effective for folks," Safranek said.
Safranek is a Harvard Medical School graduate who has specialized in infectious diseases for 40 years.
He says he's treated nearly 200 patients at home and in hospitals using Ivermectin and a number of other treatments.
"None have died at none have ended up on a ventilator. Of my outpatients who I have treated, only one, of the dozens that I've treated, has even ended up in the hospital," Safranek said.
He helped Carrol Burrell.
The 80-year-old Omaha woman survived two battles with COVID-19, the second after she had been fully vaccinated.
"I was better the next day, not well but better," Burrell said.
"And each day, I got better. And now I am over it," Burrell said.
But other U.S. and world health organizations, including the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, say Ivermectin is not proven yet.
"Further studies need to be done to show Ivermectin has utility in the treatment of COVID-19," said UNMC Medical Director of Infectious Disease Dr. Mark Rupp.
Rupp said UNMC uses a number of methods including monoclonal antibody treatment for outpatients. And drugs like Remdesavir for hospital patients.
"We, in general, have shied away from Ivermectin," Rupp said.
Safranek says Ivermectin, unlike hydroxychloroquine, has few side effects and Ivermectin is inexpensive.
He said his most important message is to get treatment early.
"If people are intent on getting back to normal, if they want to socialize normally, If they become symptomatic they need to get tested. And if possible, reach out for treatment that might be of benefit," Safranek said.
