No Joke

Lost my Cable and internet for two whole days -due to a regional outage. Finally a technician shows up and fixes everything in 15 minutes.

I had no idea how miserable it could be to have no news and weather updates - but worse - I could not log on to FReeRepublic or get emails.

Not a crisis, like floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, fires or hurricanes - but it made me realize how fortunate I am to live on this Earth in this country. right now.

God Bless sod

We didn’t just survive. We lived! Or something like that

Our cell phone is so important to us now, that if we forget to take it with us when we go out-— we go back home to get it. Sick!

One good EMP from a large solar glare and half the world will be black and without communication for many weeks. Think of the 1859 Carrington event. They only lost Telegraphs back then. Much more to lose today.

I put solar onto my house to give me some power even if the Dims control-freak it away from us.

It produces about 3/4th of the power I consume. On rainy days it's about 1/3rd of the power. So I could get by without a generator if needed. And with a decent generator I could be off grid completely (though the gas/diesel to run it would cost more than the kWh I pay the power co).

It'll take anywhere from 11 to 13 years to pay for itself (depending on the inflation rate of per kWh charge), assuming the Dims to put a punitive tax on power to save us from our carbon sins. If they do that my system will pay for itself a lot sooner.

“Yep. IT = “Interoffice Telecommunication””

To think...those that used to be lowly file clerks now tell businesses and governments how to do things, control their information and made Microsoft gigantic.

No cable or internet for two whole days?

I could live with that. Definitely. Sometimes you need to unplug yourself from this sordid hot mess of a world and just eat, pray, love, meditate, whatever and ignore the world.

National weather radio. They’re rather inexpensive and are not subject to cable or internet outages. Transmits on VHF frequencies.

You should be able to get onto the internet with your phone.

We lost all that and more during the big TX freeze a few months ago. I knew the tv was an easy fix but no one would answer customer service for a week after the thaw. Yep, all it took was me pushing one button. Of course, I still got charged for the 3 weeks. Snort, got charged for the past 20 years of having internet down 50 times a day and chugging along at 18 to 35 mbps so was used to doing without.

The cell tower went down the first day of the freeze. When they got around to fixing it, they upgraded it past what the old flip phone could handle or something. So, no cell phone until I bought a new one yesterday because Mr. b was getting antsy. Haven’t really missed not having a cell.

The house phone was in and out. Parents’ phone was out the whole time. Then Mr. b ended up in the ER without any way to call out. Such complaints in modern days.

Identify alternative access opportunities.

The last power outage we had, I ran some lights and fans from my truck and used an internet hotspot from my truck.

It’s not cheap, and it’s not blazing speed— but my wife needed a back up solution for her work.

There’s enough youtube FREE that satisfies the video crave

Yes, and Rumble is rapidly putting together a video library as well (but still light years away from YouTube).

I've actually been finding clips from older movies on YouTube and you can piece them together to pretty much see the entire movie.

But there is enough full length documentaries, movies, TV shows, concerts and other material there to last you a lifetime. All for free (if you can tolerate a little advertising).

A guilty pleasure of mine recently on YouTube is the Netherlands Bach Society. The entire works of Johann Sebastian Bach! The production is exemplary.

Is there a short wave radio station that gives reliable news?
How about a ham radio emergency news frequency?
Had major fire mandatory fire evacuation and roads out for a couple years due to flood. I have that part figured out. What long radio stations are reliable?
