The concerns come as the Bristol County Sheriff's Department says it has a new tool in the fight against COVID-19: specially trained K-9s that can sniff out traces of the coronavirus.
Dogs have been used for years to look for drugs, chemicals and missing people. Using them as virus-hunters is relatively new. In fact -- no other police agency has tried it before.
A 9-month-old dog named Duke enters a room at the Bristol County Sheriff's Department. Duke's handler leads him past a refrigerator where a fragment of a face mask worn by a COVID-19 patient has been hidden in the door. After one pass and then a second, Duke sits, a signal that he has detected the smell of the coronavirus.
“With body language and the way he acts and how he breathes, I can tell he's actually hitting,” said Officer Theodore Santos, Bristol County Sheriff's Department.
The sheriff's department said it spent nine weeks and about $5,000 to $7,000 training Duke and another dog named Huntah based on a program developed by the Florida International University which says its dogs are 90 percent effective at detecting the virus.
“I contacted the captain and said, 'let's get ahold of them down in Florida International University.' He did. They were very interested. We're the first law enforcement agency in the country to do this. And we're very proud of that,” said Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson.
Earlier this year, COVID-19-sniffing dogs were used to screen fans entering a Miami Heat basketball game. The sheriff's department says its dogs will not sniff people but rather places, such as the county jail which will then receive a thorough cleaning if COVID-19 is detected.

So now they are claiming the dogs can smell the magic virus that is a theory. This is designed to say well the dog smelled something, and you are guilty.
Again where is the long term scientific evidence to backing this up that Covid 19 has a smell. Moreover, survived two Summers even though viruses are seasonal.
Exactly
Even if this were a scientifically established means of detecting COVID, why is a law enforcement agency investing the money and training? Is it now a crime to be COVID +? Maybe possession of a virus with intent to distribute?
Great point!
It’s like Ebonics. The money is there, now. These slugs just have to find innovative ways to grab some of it.
If there was no free money for this or sheriff spent his own money.......................
What is the law enforcement objective in this?
Figures that this would be from a leftist county in leftist Massholechusetts.
Couldn’t be arsed to say where this Bristol County is?
MA. Home of the Massholes.
Hopefully you are not in the 10% of the cases the dog misreads.
if true (and i’d say bs meter pegged on this one), it’s animal abuse and these leos ought to be charged with animal cruelty.
This is silly, if the dogs can smell, they obviously don’t have Covid.
“Sheriff’s Department Adds LGBTQP+-Sniffing K9s To Force”
Imagine the hilarity.
This is just the excuse to turn the dogs on us, if they can. This is going to get very much worse, very rapidly.
So were are supposed to wear masks and stay 6 feet apart, but they let dogs breathe this in? Sorry isn’t this animal cruelty? Where the sh!t are the @ssholes of Peta and the Humane Society?
#15. Why doesn’t the sheriff just hire Nancy Pelosi, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Maxine Waters as his “COVID-sniffing dogs”? These bitches have decades of experience putting their Marxist/psychopathic noses up the butts of decent Americans.
Maybe this new job would actually have them do something useful for the country instead of betraying it.
This is tied for the most egregious violation of human rights with the NC
door-to-door vax jabbers & their database. Although no place is worse than Massatwoshits.
“My dog has Covid!”
“Really? How’s he smell?”
“Awful!”
