Hailed as a miracle in the 1950s, the potent bug killer DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) promised freedom from malaria, typhus and other insect-borne diseases. Manufacturers promoted it as a “benefactor of all humanity” in advertisements that declared, “DDT Is Good for Me!” Americans sprayed more than 1.35 billion tons of the insecticide—nearly 7.5 pounds per person—on crops, lawns and pets and in their homes before biologist Rachel Carson and others sounded the alarm about its impacts on humans and wildlife. The fledgling U.S. Environmental Protection Agency banned DDT in 1972.
Friends and family often ask Barbara Cohn, an epidemiologist at Oakland's Public Health Institute, why she studies the effects of the long-banned pesticide. Her answer: DDT continues to haunt human bodies. In earlier studies, she found that the daughters of mothers exposed to the highest DDT levels while pregnant had elevated rates of breast cancer, hypertension and obesity.
Cohn's newest study, on the exposed women's grandchildren, documents the first evidence that DDT's health effects can persist for at least three generations. The study linked grandmothers' higher DDT exposure rates to granddaughters' higher body mass index (BMI) and earlier first menstruation, both of which can signal future health issues.
“This study changes everything,” says Emory University reproductive epidemiologist Michele Marcus, who was not involved in the new research. “We don't know if [other human-made, long-lasting] chemicals like PFAS will have multigenerational impacts—but this study makes it imperative that we look.” Only these long-term studies, Marcus says, can illuminate the full consequences of DDT and other biologically disruptive chemicals to help guide regulations.

First, Rachel Carson is probably responsible for more deaths than Hitler and Stalin combined, not that she meant to, but via malaria which had been controlled by DDT and now isn’t.
Secondly, there was a professor in California who ate a pound of the stuff to show it was harmless to humans. When I told my junior high students this (their history book had a glowing bit on Rachel Carson) they’d ask “What happened?”
“He died...”, I’d answer, “...thirty years later while climbing a mountain while in his 80s”. Thus ended the lesson for the day.
The study “article” lacked detail. There are a lot of factors that might have influenced these folks other than DDT levels.
We had trucks spraying DDT drive through neighborhood every evening.
J. Gordon Edwards
Edwards was known for eating DDT before lecturing on its safety
Edwards was a prominent supporter of the use of DDT and critic of Rachel Carson. He claimed that bans of DDT were not based on good science, and accused environmentalists of politicizing issues regarding pesticides
I'd link the inverted food pyramid and eating crap that is no longer food.
Correlation is not causation. I’m betting that DDT use was highest in poor or rural locations. Poverty has a much higher correlation with obesity because of the diets high in cheap carbs.
So I guess the mRNA injection is the new DDT?
It also has a rough chronological coincidence with the widespread use of estrogenic oral contraceptives.
Just sayin'...
That's one way to shut down this study.
So, us kids running behind the DDT sprayer back in 1956 was bad for our future kids?
And when I soaked myself down in SE Asia with DDT bug killer to keep the mosquitos off was bad?
I’m 74 years old and still doing well!
Awesome article!!!
Fantastic that they bring this up!!!
The DDT scare, based on a fictitious book “Silent Spring” and playing into rumors and fears that were unfounded and unscientific, cost thousands of people their lives.
Even there the MSM aided in the spread of a lie (because it sounded good and was populist) and then didn’t report on the consequences in places like Sri Lanka.
You had actual subject matter experts eating teaspoons of raw 99% pure DDT in front of Congress trying to stop the madness, but once the train leaves the station and picks up steam, it’s hard to stop something so massive.
DDT was the first fake environmentalist/public safety story that became politicized.
DDT I believe was one of the first things the newly created EPA (an agency looking to justify its existence and exploited by corporate America) regulated.
Today this is rather the norm than the exception, and the stupidity has spread to diseases, i.e. Zika, West Nile, SARS, bird/swine flu were the opening shots before Covid. It only took the right timing (i.e. an election year).
Of course there too politicians are “following the science.” That’s why we closed public pools and beaches, because we all know salt water, UV light, fresh uncirculated air, sand, and the heat is where a virus likes to hang out! Yes sir, Chorine in the water and air so strong it bleaches your hair and cloths, burns your nostrils, that’s where you need to be worried! And the mask? Oh yeah, that’s real science right there... because the average person changes them out every 10 minutes when they become damp, right? Because most folks don’t reuse masks over multiple days... I bet most of those masks were a frigging bio hazard, growing crap in them. What exactly did they accomplish by closing all the restaurants, making old folk homes take back positive patients, NY saying they need 200,000 ventilators... science, science, science. Don’t argue, it’s all factual and science!
Glad they bring up DDT, it was the first of it’s kind - complete BS.
But there does seem to be a problem -
Lawsuits:
“Diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after using Roundup (glyphosate) weed killer? “
DDT is manufactured by China, India and N Korea. They export it all over the world in the millions of metric tonns.
Have never read a study of these countries use of DDT or adverse effects of use.
Look up Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome - PCOS (also know as Poly-Cystic Ovarian Disease -PCOD). It's an endocrine issue in women. It can really screw things up. Millions are affected by it. Weight gain that has nothing to do with intake/activity - metabolism all shot to hell, hirsuteness, infertility, and other issues. I also think there is a link between PCOS and autism spectrum issues. But that's just a personal observation. Nothing scientific about it. There are studies possibly linking low vitamin D in women to spectrum disorders in children as well.
Junk science rules.
They were still issuing a can of the powdered stuff when I was in the Army. Can't imagine why the issued it tho......
I remember something that really worked, don't remember the name but it involved a small heating bowl that you dropped crystals in that vaporized and killed bugs in the house dead, dead, dead. Forced off market soon after I saw someone using it, early 50's.
This sleazy rag posing as a scientific journal knows no bounds, these days, as it promotes revisionist propaganda...
So do you think the COVID vaccine will get this type of scrutiny in years to come? I don’t think so. The makers of DDT mustn’t have donated to the Democrat party like big Pharma does.
Exactly. Bravo.
That is thousands of tonns exported.
