BANGKOK (AP) — Several countries around Asia and the Pacific that are experiencing their first major surges of the coronavirus rushed to impose tough restrictions, a year and a half into a pandemic that many initially weathered well.
Faced with rapidly rising numbers of infections in recent months, authorities in such countries as Thailand, South Korea and Vietnam announced or imposed measures Friday that they hope can slow the spread before health care systems are overwhelmed.
It’s a rhythm familiar in much of the world, where repeated surges deluged hospitals and led to high numbers of deaths. But many Asian countries avoided that cycle by imposing stiff travel restrictions combined with tough measures at home...
...Of Thailand’s 317,506 confirmed cases and 2,534 deaths since the pandemic started, more than 90% have come since the start of April....

Everybody gets their turn.
We are opening so what gives? Those places in Asia are crowded btw.
Looks like our turn may be coming around again. Positive numbers at 26K for yesterday. First time over 20K in a long time. Of course it may be the bureaucracy is playing catchup from the July 4 weekend.
I recall telling people here that locking down was futile because it wasn’t going to flatten the curve - just delay the inevitable.
Well… here we are. We’ve wrecked civilization and encouraged our governments to become agents of totalitarianism and for what - a disease that isn’t stopped by taking the vaccine, is still communicable but somehow magically defeats the body’s immune systems - let alone herd immunity.
Folks this is looking more and more like something planned and not organic…
The world has had more than a year to build healthcare facilities and train caregivers to deal with any “surge” of the China Virus.
If there is any nation which has not, it can only be concluded that the government there wants these lockdowns to continue for its own (most likely nefarious) purposes.
Good point.
Remember after 9/11 businesses refused to stay shut because they said that’s what the terrorists wanted? What happened?
I wouldn’t be surprised if Los Angeles area is leading the numbers. SoCal remains a never-ending cluster.
I guess this is the fate of the world from hereon.... open, lockdown, open, lockdown repeat the cycle until doomsday.
Ralph Baric ("Mr. Gain-of-Function" before it got shipped to the Wuhan lab) was studying coronavirus-induced cardiomyopathy (sound familiar?) in rabbits *back in the 1990s.*.
And the first coronavirus spike protein based vaccine, was patented by Pfizer back in 1999.
