On this date in 1863

Posted on 07/04/2021 8:41:00 AM PDT by Bull Snipe

Confederate General John Pemberton surrendered the city of Vicksburg MS and its 29 thousand defenders to Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant. This was the second Confederate General to surrender his army to Grant. Defeated, in battle at Gettysburg, by General George Meades Army of the Potomac; General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia begins its withdrawal from Pennsylvania. About one third of Lee's Army were casualties.

Quite a 4th of July for the Union.

No dice. Membership is for descendants of commissioned officers. My greatX5 grandad never rose about the rank of private.

"Thank you for acknowledging the radical Republican corrupt bargain.
I thought it might take three or four posts to get that admission."

Historians call it a "corrupt bargain" but Democrats were happy with it.
They cared more about removing Federal Reconstruction troops from former Confederate states than about winning the 1876 election.
From that time on the South reverted to radical Democrats' control, thus nullifying the new 13th, 14th & 15th Amendments.

"Next, I'll have you agreeing the Grant administration was corrupt."

Sure, but no more or less than any other.
The difference is that the "mainstream" Democrat press went after Grant the same way they've more recently gone after Donald Trump.

Typical Democrat media squawking.

“By the way, the South would have broken up into more little states.”

That is an interesting comment.

May we see your data on that?

“They cared more about removing Federal Reconstruction troops from former Confederate states than about winning the 1876 election.”

Once in a while you write something that makes a little sense.

You could build credibility by adding the South knew they didn’t have the political and military power to have their way - and the North did - so they negotiated the best deal they could. Yes, they accepted the North’s corrupt offer.

Even southerners could not image just how toxic the coming Union victory would be.

How much more toxic would a Confederate victory have been?

“How much more toxic would a Confederate victory have been?”

No one can know for sure, but I fear it would have been pretty bad.

The Confederates could have gotten us into two world wars, run up a national deficit that today would exceed 10 billion dollars, adopted social policies that encouraged a thousand secret abortions a year, and imposed possibly hundreds of pages of federal laws, rules, and regulations over the past 156 years.

The Confederates could have - I’m saying could have - denied specific groups of people a good education by forcing them to attend public schools.

Under the dictatorial Confederates the tax on tea could be 3 cents per pound, gasoline would probably cost at least a dollar per gallon, and income taxes could be as high as five percent.

Don’t say it couldn’t have happened. We just don’t know.

Virginia's Rufus: "In 1865 some of the Northern states restricted voting to white males."

I've seen nothing to suggest which ones did or didn't, but since until around 1932, nearly all African Americans voted Republican, a good guess is only Democrat states restricted black voting.

Virginia's Rufus: "The Fourteenth Amendment was carefully crafted to try to force the Southern states to grant the vote to black men (by threatening loss of Congressional seats if they did not--a threat never actually carried out) while not affecting the Northern states where the number of blacks was insignificant (generally under 1%)."

More important, until around 1932 nearly all African Americans voted Republican, so it was not an issue for Northern Republicans.
In those days black voters were only an issue to radical Democrats.

Virginia's Rufus: "They pushed for the Fifteenth Amendment, which did extend voting rights in all states, only when they realized that the small number of black men in the North could be the margin of victory in close elections."

The only issue was black voter suppression in the South.
Northern Republicans had no fear of black voters.

Virginia's Rufus: "New York did not pass a law against discriminating against people on the basis of race in hiring until 1948."

New York was & is a Democrat city, it's laws reflected values of Democrat voters.
Many New York Democrats wanted to secede in 1860 and ally with Confederates-- it's where their hearts lay.
Fortunately common sense prevailed, but that is not always the case in New York.

jeffersondem: "Yes, they accepted the North’s corrupt offer."

So, do you think it was a bad deal and should have been rejected?
How many more years do you think Union troops should have stayed in former Confederate States to enforce the 13th, 14th & 15th Amendments?

Are you sorry they left too soon?

“So, do you think it was a bad deal and should have been rejected? . . .”

My reckless generosity got the best of me (post 44) and I bragged and bragged on you: “Once in a while you write something that makes a little sense.”

Now, you offer me tainted bait. No thanks.

"My reckless generosity...you offer me tainted bait."

Your "generosity" was tainted and you're a typical Democrat, wishing to have your cake and eat it too.

In this case you wish to condemn the "corrupt bargain", blame it on Republicans and still accept the deal as right & proper.

No surprise there.

C’mon cowboyusa - you need to leave the possibility that demojeff isn’t just another garden variety America hater. He may just be trolling in order to leave the indelible impression that he is just another garden variety America hater.

“Storied aspiration.”

I never met Kate or Edith and at my age wouldn’t know what to do with one, much less both of them.

But I can somewhat sympathize with you school boys and your eyes bigger than your... ah... ah... stomachs.
