Even southerners could not image just how toxic the coming Union victory would be.

How much more toxic would a Confederate victory have been?

“How much more toxic would a Confederate victory have been?”

No one can know for sure, but I fear it would have been pretty bad.

The Confederates could have gotten us into two world wars, run up a national deficit that today would exceed 10 billion dollars, adopted social policies that encouraged a thousand secret abortions a year, and imposed possibly hundreds of pages of federal laws, rules, and regulations over the past 156 years.

The Confederates could have - I’m saying could have - denied specific groups of people a good education by forcing them to attend public schools.

Under the dictatorial Confederates the tax on tea could be 3 cents per pound, gasoline would probably cost at least a dollar per gallon, and income taxes could be as high as five percent.

Don’t say it couldn’t have happened. We just don’t know.
