Ukraine’s parliament on Thursday backed a decision to rename a Ukrainian town to New York in a bid to distance itself from its Soviet past.
The town of Novgorodske in the eastern Donetsk region campaigned for years to get its old name back. […]
German settlers and members of the Mennonite Church, who came to Russia under Catherine the Great, founded the town in 1892.
The settlement was named after the Big Apple because the wife of one of the founders was of American origin.

I'll make it anywhere.
It's up to you,
New York, Ukraine!
My family’s ancestors also came to that area at the invitation of Catherine the Great. I have seen a map of the Mennonite, Jewish and Catholic towns that were established there.
So they decided to change the name from the Soviet-sounding “Novgorodske” to the much more Soviet-sounding “New York.”
They need a MLK Blvd to complete the picture. Good luck with that.
I'm sure it's a twin...Wall Street, Broadway Shows, etc etc
Ridiculous
Many Americans want to distance themselves from NY.
Surely, they could have picked any of a million other names.
Why not “New Amsterdam”?
I bet they have more freedoms and liberty in the Ukrainian one.
Good for them. It’s not exactly a unique name. According to my quick internet search they’ll be #16.
Back in USSR days, the name “New York” probably did symbolize everything the communist regime hated.
And it’s not like the media over there are going to cover the depredations of Cuomo and De Blasio truthfully anyhow.
Forget the “big” apple...
Head for the “little” apple...
Less crime...
Fewer perverts...
Lower taxes...
Where’s the map showing its location ?
Велике яблуко
Just as an aside I hope Ukraine destroys those kneeling English today.
For the right sum of money I’d imagine you could get Ukraine to name a town anything you wanted.
Bkmk
I like it.
This town was apparently originally named “New York” back in 1892.
But that’s most likely true.
