A past and potentially future leading Republican contender for the presidency is weighing in on behalf of Britney Spears as the 2000s pop icon tries to rid herself of her father’s heavy hand in a bitter conservatorship debate.
"#FreeBritney," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted on Thursday.
"I just want my life back," Spears said. "All I want is to own my money and for my boyfriend to be able to drive me in his car. I want to sue my family."
During a virtual hearing in Los Angeles Wednesday, the "Toxic" singer gave 20 minutes of compelling testimony in which she said that her father, who was appointed her conservator in 2008, "loved" the control he had over her.
In March, Reps. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, called for a congressional hearing on conservatorships, arguing the practice could deprive citizens of "personal freedoms" if courts were manipulated.
"I just want my life back," Spears said. "All I want is to own my money and for my boyfriend to be able to drive me in his car. I want to sue my family."
She told the court she had been forced to take lithium against her will, forced to use birth control, and forced to perform when she didn't want to.

The flaw of some on the political right is that we ceded the culture and we focused in only on politics.
I have had to take care of the finances of a mentally ill person who lived alone.
I could only handle it for a few years. It was a nightmare.
I don’t know who is right or wrong in Britney’s case but it isn’t an easy thing to deal with on both sides.
Had no one stepped in Britney probably would have been broke and dead. She is bad enough that she isn’t allowed around her kids very much. She has no business having another kid.
The boyfriend is rumored to have been seeking advice on how to handle large sums of money.
Whatever happens, he should not be able to touch any of it.
Come on people. She’s got talent(I think), good looks(i think), plenty of money. So what if she’s a ditz? Bring more American kids into this country. Look what we’re up against.

He has a law degree & so it is quite understandable that he spoke up. We had dinner with another couple last night, he is a lawyer, and he said he was appalled at how she has been treated. She’s essentially a prisoner.
I would have loved President Trump to tweet “Free Britney” just to get the Democrats to demand that she remain under conservatorship or even be permanently institutionalized because Orangemanbad.
She is that, but the woman is now 39 years old. If she wants to pickle her brain with all the money she has made, she should be free to do it. Her dear old dad has her tied up so he can have a free ride off her money. That creep’s free ride should be over.
Just because you don't like her doesn't mean she has no rights. So what I see here is people who don't like her and people that don't like Ted Cruz throwing the Constitution under the bus.

I agree. I think there’s a lot we don’t know. Your experience sounds exhausting. And yes.....I would like to hope that her boyfriend genuinely loves her & has her best interests at heart. But we all have seen too many instances of people being used for their money.
She is a troubled and tormented woman. I hope she gets the help she needs.

Her dad was an alcoholic. I dont know at what point he became one but dealing with a metally ill person is exhausting...and that is just for a commoner. Cant imagine what it is like to deal with a celebrity.
