A past and potentially future leading Republican contender for the presidency is weighing in on behalf of Britney Spears as the 2000s pop icon tries to rid herself of her father’s heavy hand in a bitter conservatorship debate.
"#FreeBritney," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted on Thursday.
"I just want my life back," Spears said. "All I want is to own my money and for my boyfriend to be able to drive me in his car. I want to sue my family."
During a virtual hearing in Los Angeles Wednesday, the "Toxic" singer gave 20 minutes of compelling testimony in which she said that her father, who was appointed her conservator in 2008, "loved" the control he had over her.
In March, Reps. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, called for a congressional hearing on conservatorships, arguing the practice could deprive citizens of "personal freedoms" if courts were manipulated.
"I just want my life back," Spears said. "All I want is to own my money and for my boyfriend to be able to drive me in his car. I want to sue my family."
She told the court she had been forced to take lithium against her will, forced to use birth control, and forced to perform when she didn't want to.

Oops, Ted did it again.
Why on earth did Cruz feel the need to comment on Britney Spears?
Britney Spears wants to tell her story to the world.
She wants to use the experiences that have happened to her to cause broader change, and I think we ought to give her that opportunity in the United States Congress. #FreeBritney pic.twitter.com/dggL8PES1o— Rep. Matt Gaetz (@RepMattGaetz) June 25, 2021
What am I missing? We live in an era where it is practically impossible to commit the mentally ill to treatment, but this woman has been restrained by the courts so that she can’t live her own life? OK, she’s quirky, but does that justify depriving her of liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
Well she’s an American, effectively imprisoned and robbed by a bunch of Democrats abusing the legal system.
Kind of a model of America.
So… that crying “Leave Britney Alone!!!!” emo kid was right all along.
I actually don’t care one way or the other. I’m a Brittney Who? person. If Cruz cares, that’s OK with me though it seems just a tad inappropriate.
It’s super easy to commit someone if they have the ability to pay massive private care fees.
The private mental health racket is amazing.
Lots of rich kids use it to lock away inconvenient parents.
I’d like to know where this person is today... just curious to how their life has turned out.
From google:
“After the release of the “Leave Britney Alone” clip, Crocker went on to release music of his own. ... Crocker’s work nowadays involves filming short-form, self-directed monologues. In 2015, he closed his YouTube account but he’s still creating content for Instagram and his OnlyFans account.”
Good for Ted highlighting this scummy scam.
Cuz Ted believes in freedom and liberty and also has the hots for her as he does for Alyssa Milano. In the late 90s Cruz, 28, became a huge Britney Spears fan much to the chagrin of his then girlfriend and future Heidi at the time. Ted and Lindsey have been known to sing Britney Spears - Toxic at the karaoke bars in DC.
Personal Liberty is certainly under heavy attack.
Using BS [bad combination of names apparently] as an example to show The Woke the issues is not a bad tactic.
Because he is an attention whore.
Sheesh..I thought it was a woman
Is this how political idiots try to stay relevant?
Let her have control of her money and 5 years down the line when she broke and doing her lounge lizard act in Vegas will we still feel sorry for her?
She is not competent to manage her affairs but let her blow it all. Her best earning years are gone.
