Western high-fat diet can cause chronic pain, according to new study

A typical Western high-fat diet can increase the risk of painful disorders common in people with conditions such as diabetes or obesity, according to a groundbreaking paper…

Moreover, changes in diet may significantly reduce or even reverse pain from conditions causing either inflammatory pain -- such as arthritis, trauma or surgery -- or neuropathic pain, such as diabetes. The novel finding could help treat chronic-pain patients by simply altering diet or developing drugs that block release of certain fatty acids in the body.

In the new paper, Dr. Boyd and his colleagues used multiple methods in both mice and humans to study the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in pain conditions. They found that typical Western diets high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats served as a significant risk factor for both inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

Omega-6 fats, mainly found in foods with vegetable oils, have their benefits. But Western diets associated with obesity are characterized by much-higher levels of those acids in foods from corn chips to onion rings, than healthy omega-3 fats, which are found in fish and sources like flaxseed and walnuts.

Generally, unhealthy foods high in omega-6 fats include processed snacks, fast foods, cakes, and fatty and cured meats, among others.

Reversal of this diet, especially by lowering omega-6 and increasing omega-3 lipids, greatly reduced these pain conditions, the researchers found. Also, the authors demonstrated that skin levels of omega-6 lipids in patients with Type 2 diabetic neuropathic pain were strongly associated with reported pain levels and the need for taking analgesic drugs.

It’s not the fat. It’s the wrong kind of fat. Seed oils. Eat animal fat from healthy animals and some clean olive and coconut oils. You can eat over 50% of your diet in healthy fats and stay slim. I do. I don’t eat sugars and very much carbs though.

My left knee was killing me. I had trouble getting out of a car. I lost 80 pounds and lost the pain too.

I was totally with low carb and high fat, but now think it’s best low carb and low fat from meat.

Had to learn to love salmon.

The article’s title and preamble is absurd. Furthermore the “bad fats” distinction is a prevalent factor in high-carb and salty junk foods. And high-carb diets are the leading cause of problems for those with T2 diabetes.

A poorly constructed article — at least what’s in the excerpt.

I lost 190 pounds and my pain was much relieved!

(Alimony’s still a bit painful, though.)

How about high-fructose corn syrup in everything that used to have plain sugar.

How about soy oil in everything.

How about MSG being used commonly today.

How about aspertame and sucralose.

Nah, they never cause chronic pain. It is just fat.

The medical community is so full of s#!^ today. My conspiracy theory is looking better and better, that the FDA has approved a huge variety of toxins to be used in our food to keep us sick so we have to go crawling to Big Medicine and Big Pharma for help.

Dirty rotten greedy b@$^@rds.

salmon is a fatty fish; 30-50% fat depending on species

There’s such a thing as protein starvation - that’s when you eat too much protein and not enough fat. (learned this from an alaskan survival show - the guy killed a moose but still lost substantial weight eating only lean meat after a bobcat stole his cache of moosefat)

When I stopped eating anything with sugar, (including alcohol, ALL ALCOHOL) anything with high fat, anything processed and all dairy - extremely rare exceptions to all of the above. My chronic arthritis pain pretty much went away - and in only a couple weeks. All the nagging little pains went bye bye too. 7 hours of sleep every day and to the gym first thing in the morning for 1 hour of lifting weights, 2 miles at speed on a stationary bike and 2 miles BRISK walking on the treadmill. At 63 years old, I get looks from 30 somethings.

Young hotties love older men but you have to look like you have discipline in life and aren’t sedentary -

My gal pal now is a 36 year old former professional wrestler and gymnast. So life is better when you work hard at living right

“I’m on a high fat diet but very low carb. I pay no attention to the kind of fat I eat. My chronic pain has disappeared. I’m not the only one with these results.”

This has worked for me my entire life. When I need to cut weight - cut way down on carbs, way down on sugar, regular exercise in the form of weight training and regular cardio (weight training and cardio or circuit weight training to take care of both but you have to be in pretty good shape already to attempt circuit training with weights. But it will rip you up.)

Interesting way to try to take down Keto - instead of going after the low carb side, they go after the high fat side.

Nothing in the article mentions carbs, and so what they are saying may well be true - if you have a high fat / high carb diet, it probably will make a mess of your body.
