“Where should we eat tomorrow?” my wife asked me excitedly as we sat on our deck Friday evening.
She had locked down a babysitter for Saturday night, and we were both eager for our first dinner date alone together in months.
“Broders’,” I answered without hesitation.
Located in southwest Minneapolis, Broders Pasta Bar is a local gem. It has a great outdoor patio and the best Italian cuisine in the Twin Cities. We had not eaten there since the pandemic began.
My wife nodded and started to make a reservation on her phone. Then her jaw dropped.
“You’re not going to like this,” she said.
On its website, Broders’ has a notice to customers notifying them of a new 15 percent “benefits and equity” charge they’ve instituted. They justify the charge, first, by explaining that “many states have allowed reduced minimum wages for service staff in the form of a tip credit.” (More on this in a minute.)
The restaurant’s second justification is that many tippers are racist and sexist, according to uncited research.
“Studies have also shown that there is inequity and built-in bias in the way consumers give tips,” the statement reads. “In general, Black or Brown servers receive less tips than Caucasian servers. There is gender bias as well.”
The final part of the statement says the new policy stems from wider racial injustice and is not a substitute for gratuity.
“In the wake of racial injustice protests and the closures due to Covid, now is the time for Broders’ to reimagine its economics and provide fair pay across the company,” the statement reads. “Our Benefits & Equity Charge is applied entirely to employee compensation. This supplement helps us to set a $16 minimum hourly wage for customer facing employees, $18 minimum hourly wage for kitchen employees… Altogether this allows everyone in our company to earn a real living wage. The 15% Benefits & Equity Charge is not a gratuity.”
I have several friends that wait tables in Myrtle Beach. They all said blacks are the worst tippers (usually no tip) and leave the table in a wreck. None of them want to wait tables during black bike week.
I was sure without reading they didn’t go there. The author was able to construct cogent sentences that was enough for me to know he was smart enough to stay away from the crazies.
Then you don’t go to those type restaurants period. Not a hard decision.
In many parts of the US such a policy would
doom a restaurant, but this is Minneapolis. Who knows, maybe they know their customers. Probably depends on the white guilt quotient in their white clientele.
Hell would be frozen over with a foot thick of ice with Fauxi frozen in it before I’d ever let my shadow cross the threshold to patronize any joint doing that crap. It wouldn’t matter if they had the best food on the planet. They’d never see one red penny of my money ever again.
They just can’t help themselves. It’s Virtue Signaling Uber Alles - even if I go out of business because of offensive and stupid statements and policies.
If I find out only after I'm a customer I will refuse to pay such fees. There will be a very loud, very public scene. There will be management. There may be local PD. There will be no tip, none. Whatever payment is offered will be placed on a credit card. The entire charge will be disputed with the credit card company immediately - as in from the parking lot.
Any business owners reading this take heed. Such policies are a great way to drive away customers, make your employee's lives h**l (and how hard is it to find and retain good employees right now?), and ruin the experience of visiting your establishment for everyone.
Probably. So think of this, the marxists now control our schools, they will very soon control our local law enforcement, they control our healthcare, they control our information through media, they are working on controlling our social media, and they DESPERATELY WANT TO CONTROL OUR GUNS, THE LAST FRONTIER.
WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO CONTROL?
Why are they still living in Minneapolis?
i will def check my local places for such an added fee.

Get woke, go broke.
” I guess the market will determine how well this propaganda restaurant will do with its stated policy.”
Just a hunch, “they’re Toast!”
I tip the same, but recently have stopped eating out.
When Subway asks for tips, you aren’t going to be a viable business for long. A Sub sandwich with drink is pushing $15, and I like my cooking better.
Asians don’t tip?
Didn’t know that. Though, back home most of the Vietnamese refuges were restaurant owners, and they tipped well when they ate out.
If that’s the prevailing attitude at that restaurant, Lord knows what they do to the food they serve you.
You're an odd one, aren't you...
“Rule #1: Don’t live in Minneapolis.”
As soon as I saw “Minneapolis” I thought, well duh, there’s the whole problem right there.
I would prefer they did away with tips altogether....resturants should just pay their employees a decent wage and charge a fair price!!!
This “should” self-correct when their business dries up.
