A company backed by Amazon's Jeff Bezos is set to build a large-scale nuclear fusion demonstration plant in Oxfordshire.
Canada's General Fusion is one of the leading private firms aiming to turn the promise of fusion into a commercially viable energy source.
The new facility will be built at Culham, home to the UK's national fusion research programme.
It won't generate power, but will be 70% the size of a commercial reactor.
General Fusion will enter into a long-term commercial lease with the UK Atomic Energy Authority following the construction of the facility at the Culham campus.
While commercial details have not been disclosed, the development is said to cost around $400m.
It aims to be operational by 2025.
UK experiment could sweep aside fusion hurdle Mind-boggling magnets could unlock plentiful power 'UK first' nuclear fusion plan for power station Fusion is the process by which the Sun generates energy. Harnessing it here on Earth is seen as a critical step towards greener nuclear power.
It differs from the traditional nuclear approach by attempting to fuse atoms together rather than splitting them.

But this week we learn that Jeff Bezos has stepped up to the plate after billions being spent by France and other foreign entities has resulted in almost zero advancement. Meanwhile China has succeeded in eclipsing the world record for the length of a sustained controlled fusion reaction here on earth... 216 million degrees for 101 seconds.

Then of course we have the never ending clown show of cold fusion or LENR advocates/mafia mostly made up of individuals who watched the Back to the Future series of movies one to many time. No Virginia, bumble bees flying does not prove that cold fusion is currently a viable energy source. Most should consider purchasing Steven B Krivit's excellent series of books on the subject. They are available in ebook form on Amazon and other sellers for a very nominal amount.
"Steven B. Krivit's Explorations in Nuclear Research three-book series (Hacking the Atom, Fusion Fiasco, Lost History) describes the emergence of a new field of science, one that bridges chemistry and physics. The books give readers an understanding of low-energy nuclear reaction (LENR) research and its history and provide a rare behind-the-scenes look at the players and personalities involved. The books present the results of in-depth historical research and draw on formerly inaccessible archives to describe what occurred in the research that has been mistakenly called "cold fusion."

There are lots of exciting developments currently being explored, but the most promising do not often fit the left's real agenda which is not "saving the planet", ending poverty, or anything other than controlling people's lives for fun and profit.

Ping-a-roonie!.................
Goodness gracious!
The West is dominated by vested interests who will do everything possible to scotch fusion generated power.
You make a good point, but billions have been spent researching fusion power. One of the problems is that advocates often work against their own interests by shouting down any attempt at conversation that does not fit their narrow parameters. Any one who questions a deeply held belief not backed up by facts and reason is met with derision and ridicule.
No, the West is dominate by delusional lunatics who don’t understand that a lot of other bright similarly delusional lunatics have not yet managed to figure out how to make fusion work despite tens of Billions of dollars “invested” in research to make it all happen.
We don’t yet know if it even could work on scales smaller than nuclear bombs because no one has yet made it work.
There are a lot of highly competent US scientists and engineers who want fusion to work and have a lot of money to show that it can work. So far they have failed to show it CAN work.
If someone wants to build the star ship enterprise it is not too much to ask that they show that they can actually make dilithium crystals and that when put in a warp drive you actually produce some propulsive thrust and to hold off the intergalactic mission planning until they show at least that much.
Agree completely! Fusion has not yet been shown to be commercially viable. LENR (low energy nuclear reactions) has not been shown to be commercially viable and have had the added detriment of having been plagued with a scam artists and charlatans muddying the waters along with the duped pretending that they understand the factors at play and shutting down meaningful conversation.
The real problem is that fusion hasn’t even been shown to be physically possible at scales that won’t blow up large cities. And by this I don’t mean that you can get DT or DD to fuse as isolated events and produce energy. We have been doing those experiments for nigh on a century. The issue is whether you can confine such reactions in a controlled self-sustaining configuration so that producing net energy would even be possible.
What we have learned over the last two decades is a lot of the physics reasons why it is all very very complicated [it’s called plasma instabilities, and related to the problem of trying to get a glass of water not to pour out when you tip it over.
These guys were able to do it just from watching TV reruns...
A problem with so many discussions about technical matters here and other places is that people with little understanding believe what they have read from people and organizations with their own agendas and it becomes ingrained and internalized. Our own resident fusion “expert” starts his threads with a warning to those whose view are not in lock step with his own to not participate. Amazing!
If cold fusion worked the way it’s proponents claim it already did we would have as evidence some dead scientists and/or smoking craters. If you are claiming you released those amounts of energies it must have some observable physical effect or it is not what physicists and engineers would call energy.
As of this time and after decades no devices used by scam artists trying to attract investors has been independently verified to successfully generate more electricity than what has been input. It really has turned into a bad joke. But the potential rewards are so great that it is difficult to completely disregard it. Just because charlatans have taken advantage of people claiming their devices do something that they do not... does not mean that the concept is completely without merit.
