The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Amen!
Thanks to all veterans, honoring my Uncle Nick who died at Anzio WWII.
Let me know if it works!
My two older brothers and. a sister served to defend our country during WWII..
I turned 88 two weeks ago
Where I live we have bunny rabbits, possums, raccoons, and deer among other night things. I’m betting on rabbits for a lot of the damage.
Maryland’s for CICADAS!! They are everywhere. I covered my new dwarf crape myrtle tree with a mesh laundry bag, as they even make it up to balconies.
Cabbage - organic cabbage works best. They love cabbage.
“I protected the peppers, but the Basil is toast.” (Alas!)
But...but...”The planet has a Fever!” The Basil SHOULD be toast! (Not sad droopy little Basilcicles!)
Local weather report: NE Kansas we went down to the low 40s in the past couple of days. Not a normal sort of Summer here. 4 or 5 days of Rainy weather expected.
Good for your Peppers! I have 5 more to still plant (4 Jimmy Nardellos, and Tabasco and a Thai Hot Pepper. I have run out of room and am waiting for the garlic harvest. Maybe I will put them in pots....
Greetings from soggy and cool southern New Hampshire!
I had a really nice summer workshop set up, under a 10’ by 20’ canopy, until a violent storm/micro cell blasted through on Wednesday and upended and twisted the canopy. I am in the middle of breaking down pallets and making panels for raised beds. I hope to get back at it in the next couple of days.
Household Six has advised me that finally, the vegetable garden will be planted, this coming week, which means, I will finally be able to clean the back deck.
My goal this next week, in addition to supporting HH-6, is to make the panels for four 52” by 104” raised beds to replace the existing pairs of 4’ by 4’ raised beds. These new raised beds will be 16” tall, plus 2 by 4 trim on top. To do this, I am scavenging and breaking up pallets for the wood. An interesting project. I have a pallet breaker and a pneumatic nail punch to speed the process.
Lots of compost to move...thank goodness for a John Deere 318 with loader!
A lot of work, but sounds like a good fencing arrangement!
(Does the dog run discourage any woodchucks? Have any deer been seen in the run?)
R.D. Was that a Shelter Logic canopy? Northern tool has one on sale for $119 until July 31st. I was thinking of buying one and NOT using the cover, instead using the frame and purchasing bird netting over the entire frame.
Go to the purchaser comments. One of them has some suggestions on how to make it more stable in stormy weather.

Oh I hate poison ivy! Anytime I work along the Fence line I have to stop and make certain whether I am grubbing up poison ivy and take precautions. Very allergic!
When they put in suburbs here (NE Kansas) the construction companies got the cheapest and fastest growing trees they could to plant, Silver Maples, Siberian elms, Sweet Gum and Ash trees. (I have one of the occassional thornless Honey Locust trees!) They put these out on the street side of the houses and put oak trees in the back. (Near the Power lines of course. ) Seeds and gumballs everywhere!
Thanks for posting. Interesting painting!

The painting is used as lead into their story/you tube link “10 most wonderful places on earth.” (The picture is a hook, and one one of the places!)
The picture does look a lot like Pilvia lakes in Croatia.

Good morning!
(Off to on line Services!)
I can walk through poison ivy with shorts on and it doesn’t bother me. Poison oak is a whole different matter though. There are a couple of pokeweed plants I noticed too. I would have made some Polk salad if I had spotted it earlier, lol. A friend (navy vet) died a couple of years back. His knowledge of medicinal plants found in the wild was astounding. He had a Castor bean plant that was at least 10ft tall and was one of the most spectacular things I’ve ever seen. It was varying shades of red and purple and was more like a tree. He is sorely missed this day.
That place was sold years ago, but they did watch out the breakfast nook window & see some get chased down the run.
No woodchucks or groundhogs in that part of the country. Lots of bear, rabbits, possum, and coons though.
We were at 48 degrees last night and projected again tonight.
I guess the Grand Solar Minimum is beating the Globull Warming. Ha.
Not familiar with that bean, but I’ll keep an eye out for it.
Trees and bushes are overdoing it on seeds and flowers this year. The last time I saw that happen, the winter that followed it was brutal.
