Weekly Garden Thread - May 29-June 4, 2021
May 29, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 05/29/2021 6:52:22 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Good thing the U.Tx at Austin Longhorns are not in the Big 10! (Badger burrows in your fields can break the legs of your dairy cattle!)

OK Badger slide over.

Going out to garden now. Temps are in the upper 40s.

Northern Tier states: Forecast for MN and WI tonight is what? upper 30s? Remember to protect those young plants!

The orange/orange ornamental gourd I found on the lake in the winter had an unbelievable amount of seeds in it. They are a couple of inches tall now. My Chives are blooming and so pretty. I’ve also planted some Basil in the “tree” planter. I always had poor luck with growing Basil inside, but the plant outside is doing very well.

Same problem with Beech trees here, tree litter everywhere. I’ve found out I’m a master poison ivy grower too, lol. Arboreal Appalachia, sigh.

The garden is going gangbusters.

Sadly yesterday through Monday, the weather is cold and crappy!

But so far, getting stuff in early gave it a good start.

In my experience, ground hogs come out during the day plenty.

Oh man, you have my sympathies! We had groundhogs a couple of years ago living under the barn & within striking distance of the garden. My garden is out in the open & for the most part, groundhogs/squirrels don’t like the exposure. One groundhog was coming up the fence line & climbing into our redbuds to eat the seeds. Our trap was just like the one you’ve pictured and I had a terrible time catching them. Watermelon (which I was assured was THE bait by someone with experience), cantaloupe, apples, various veggies all were used .... just couldn’t get them in the trap. We finally caught a young one with an apple. Fortunately for the garden, the coyotes appear to have run off the groundhogs - haven’t had a problem in 3-4 years. We’ve had a mama fox using the holes under the barn as a den.

Good luck - hope you get ‘em!

I bought this:

It says to put it on some apple or lettuce in the trap, and put the trap where there is some cover...

That’s what I thought.

Something comes at night and nibbles stuff

Hello Diana. It’s been raining for the last 36 hours here on The Jersey Shore. My rose bushes are loving it.

I protected the peppers, but the Basil is toast. Just three plants; I have more in the greenhouse.

Not sure WHAT I was thinking - it’s probably the most tender annual out there! Yeesh! Some gardener I am, LOL!

I read an article yesterday that The Jersey Shore is going to be INSANE this season, what with everyone being released from their Covid Cages!

Time to set up that shaved ice stand you’ve always dreamed of owning, LOL!

Three years ago this weekend, we had to put our Basset Hound, Pearl, down. (Lymphoma) Two years ago this weekend we had to put the other Basset Hound, Belle, down. (Burst disc, paralyzed) One year ago this weekend, we had to put Dad down...I mean he passed away. ;)

I’m starting to not like this weekend, either! No more pets or people can die on this weekend in my family. YA HEAR?

Glad you’re still with us! Glad you’ve planned your ESCAPE! :)

Memorial Day weekend: Remember our fallen.

Finally! 3.8" of rain last week, followed by warm weather: Everything is coming up veggies...and weeds. LOL

Asparagus is finished for the season; needs to be fertilized.

Our 40+ YO rhubarb, which we 'inherited' when we bought over 25 years ago, has pretty much shot its wad, so this year I set out 6 new crowns, in a new bed: "Glaskins Perpetual". I've dug, divided, re-manured, and fertilized, the old, but it just fails to produce any more.

Still need to plant green beans & corn.

Just for fun, I asked it Christa has a source for them.

My eldest brother’s every effective garden fence was only about6’ high; but about 3’ outside of it, he had a 4’ kennel wire fence.

The outer fence created space to wide to clear both in on3e jump; but the ‘runway’ between was too narrow for a deer to jump the inner fence; it also doubled as a run for his Beagles. :-)

Any deer that got over the 1st fence was forced to run to a corner, and jump back out of the run.

The inner fence had 1” poultry wire, which kept out all except the smallest of pests.

All gave some.

Some gave all.

I am very thankful for all who have served and are serving in our Military. God Bless the USA and our Veterans.
