A bone arrowhead found in the ancient Philistine city of Gath may have been fired off by the city's defenders as part of a last stand described in the Bible.

According to the Hebrew Bible, a king named Hazael), who ruled the kingdom of Aram from around 842 B.C. to 800 B.C., conquered Gath (also known as Tell es-Safi) before marching on Jerusalem.

People get excited about this “stuff” and it is cool...but then they create a fairy tale for its’ existence.

From the article: “The arrowhead has an impact fracture on its tip, and the arrowhead “had been broken close to the mid-shaft, perhaps as a result of this impact,” the archaeologists said The damage suggests the arrowhead hit a target, they added.”

Or the damage could be from missing the target and hitting a wall, the stony ground, or being dropped and run over by a donkey cart. See! I can throw out WAGs too. Where’s my grant?

Give an arrow head I’ll give you a story.

That’s exactly right. They really have no way of knowing in what battle, if any, this arrowhead was used. It is cool enough for those of us who are interested in such things, but they have to pump it up for the average Joe. They got news sites to sell and research grants to get, I guess.

No, you’re wrong, it is truly a miracle. How else can you explain the arrowhead came from the arrow the Russian soldier found in the mountains in Red Dawn.

That seems too large to be an arrowhead. Maybe a spear point?

The real story...Some guy found his wife in bed with Aspen, the town drunk and took a shot at him but wound up hitting the stone bed post. He was livid. Picked up the arrow and left and that’s all he wound up with after the divorce.

I did enjoy it, but its whole premise is very laughable.

Those arrowheads are worthless once broken, hence no ‘Arrowhead Repairmen’ skeletons have ever been found! ;)

We have a TON of flint rock in the ground here in SW Wisconsin. There are lots of old Indian settlements around any sized body of water, so arrowheads are relatively easy to find, but you generally find more ‘defects’ than perfect specimens.

It’s only about 3 inches which puts it in the projectile point area, and as the story goes they had no metal to make proper weapons so bone was used. I’ve no doubt it’s a projectile point, tribes all over the US have used both bone and antler when needed. I’ve seen many bone, antler and ivory projectile point’s in collections especially from the North West. Whether it was used in battle I’ve no way of knowing and neither do those who found it. One thing I can say about that point is it’s no an impact fracture, that’s not the way bone breaks from a straight on impact. It splinters and the tip of the points shows little to no damage. Having said that there’s one other possibility, it could simply be a pressure flaker for working flint. I’ve been a Flint Knapper for almost 50 years and out of necessity some of my bone and antler pressure flakers and punches are almost identical in size and shape. It may simply have been a leftover from a time before metals were used and flint and Chert was the preferred material for making points and blades. I hate it when archeologists speculate or try and romanticize their finds.

Thanks, my mistake.

And yes, you’re absolutely right about archeologists.
