BOSTON —

Exit renumbering work on a long stretch of Interstate 495 will begin Sunday night, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The project is part of the state's effort to comply with Federal Highway Administration requirements to have exit numbers based on mile markers. Advertisement

Massachusetts previously used a sequential exit numbering method, and if that method continued to be used, the state would lose federal funding.

MassDOT's exit renumbering work on I-495 between Middleborough and Amesbury will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday.

The sign installations will be broken up into four segments as follows:

It’s federally mandated age discrimination. PA has done the same thing. When you are old and have spent a lifetime going places you remember the old exit numbers. Them they change the number and you give directions using the old number to someone and they get lost. Makes it look like you are senile. Just kinda kidding. This falls squarely in the category if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. It is just a waste of money.

I can tell you that in Eastern MA, I find this annoying. It’s not as if you’re covering hundreds of miles. Where exits are every couple of miles, the old sequential style of exit label works better.

“Federal Highway Administration requirements to have exit numbers based on mile markers”

Then when some leftie decides we need to be on the metric system, they’ll have to switch them all around again. Great idea.

Lol. We just went through several years of corrupt never-ending I-15 construction locally. Your turn in Massachooshitz. They say it’s going to take 10 years. 20 is more likely once the public dollars start flowing.

Correct. If you have to add new exits between 1 and 2, you can do 1A, 1B, etc.

Well, fortunately, this is just changing numbers on signs. That can’t involve too much padding and delays, right? RIGHT???

They’ve invented a new device that is going to save millions on road repair/construction projects. It’s a shovel that stands up by itself.

Don’t be so sure.
California started long long ago and they still aren’t finished. The last time I was in California (about a decade ago) some exits were by the mile marker, some sequential and some by road name. All on the same interstate highway!
Wonder what they really spent that money on?

They are long overdue to have the exits and interchanges match the mile markers. There are still a few states that have the old system.

Nah, metric is so passe.

Furlongs. I want the exits based on how many furlongs. You'll see some awesome exit numbers then, baby!

That way they're halfway to their goal of mandating that speedometers have to display in "FPF" (furlongs per fortnight) in addition to MPH and KPH.

I like the strategy of assigning North and South to highways which travel around in a circular beltway. That makes it really easy to know which way you want to go. Just remember, head South on I-495 to go West, and North on I-495 to go East. Unless you are to the south of Boston...

The whole place is messed up.

Rhode Island is the worst. They make no sense at all and regard themselves as the worlds smartest people.
