Considered one of the most successful combat generals in US history, Gen. George S. Patton died on December 21, 1945, 12 days after breaking his neck in a car accident near Mannheim, Germany.

Sadly, a few hours after that tragic car accident, Patton was due to return back to the US.

While leading troops during World War II, Patton purchased an English bull terrier puppy that he named Willie.

Willie was known to follow Patton everywhere, and the two were seldom separated while in England.

According to some accounts, Willie would enter a room and alert soldiers in there that Patton was on his way.

The following photo shows Willie lying next to Patton's belongings a few days after the general's death.

Patton was buried at the American Cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg. Willie was sent to the US to live with Patton's wife and daughters.

My wife loves me as much as my dog does. Either I got lucky or my dog hates me. :-)

There's a sure-fire way to find out:

Thanks for the explanation. I remember the days of the Brownie camera with the flash attachment. I’m assuming this was taken by a military photographer, with something better than a Kodak Brownie.

"We could use some Patton’s right now"

These days the military is full of gutless wonders, just like the gutless Republicans in Congress.

Your wife doesn’t tell you what to do, how to drive or what to wear? You are a lucky man indeed! :)

Nope, I had one of those and I eventually had to dump her. Wife version 2 is one in a million and I am indeed lucky to have her.

One conspiracy theory I’ve run into was that TPTB took advantage of the situation.

Supposedly Patton was never treated for blood clots during his hospitalization prior to his death.
Supposedly the General had been treated for clots several times during his career. If that was the case then not treating for them would seem a glaring omission.

Thanks...I figured it was something like that. That’s probably what press photographer would have used back then.

He died days afterward of a pulmonary embolism, I believe.

Dogs hearts break even worse than humans do.

They’re part of our world... but to the dog, you ARE their whole world.

You don’t get that kind of devotion from people.

there was an article by the Daily Mail around 2006 where a GI died in Iraq and his coffin was interred briefly at the hometown church. The dog which was the GI’s pet, was front and center and laid down right in front of the casket, never moving until it was time for burial..both an amzing and somber image.

Patton was in the back seat (and seated improperly as it turned out), two men were in the front seat and uninjured and it was a head-on collision.”

****

there’s a series about American mysteries (Brad Meltzer) from History and the ending was that they interviewed the biographer or foremost expert on Patton, and he stated it wasn’t a conspiracy as Patton reportedly forgave him before he died and told the investigators not to pursue any charges as it was an accident. Patton was a forgiving man even when facing death.

Last 15 minutes was the conclusion:

I’ve photoshopped lots of shadows and the shadows in this picture look genuine. They curve in three dimensions rather than just duplicate the outline of the object.

He should have avenged his master’s death when Einsenhower came around.
