Latest Phone Scam Alert
0511/2021

Posted on 05/11/2021 10:28:00 AM PDT by Responsibility2nd

You may have had this happen to you already, but this scam is new to me.

My wife just got a call. It was a prerecorded machine advising her that her Amazon account was being charged for $700.00 and this call was to confirm. Press 1 now if this is incorrect.

She had the presence of mind to immediately hang up.

True. But if you do that, they then know there’s an actual human at your number. And then your number gets passed around to other Indians and their recordo-bots.

My day is too busy to talk about my car’s extended warranty.

Those are the ones I get whenever I DO answer the call. And I’ll do that out of boredom sometimes for fun, even though the phone tags it as “probable spam”.

Yup. Amazon does not call people. Ignore and block these scam calls. If you have been charged, you will see it I. Your account on Amazon. Always check there to see. We’ve had several calls clai ing to be fro. Amazon.

Another scam now is scam mrrs calling with a spoofed number of someone you know. Never click any buttons, just hand up, and never say ‘yes’ or ‘not or anything like that because they will use it to claim you gave co sent to switch you to another service provider, ot whatever they are peddling at the moment supposedly. Don’t know if it’s true, but. Ot gonna find out. We just hang up.

When Trump was president, scam calls went way way down. Now that Biden is the faux pres, we’re getting slammed with scam calls again

>>Anybody else ever receive this type of call?<<

Yes, but i have ignored them so far.
Prank calls, in general, have become plentiful with the onset of COVID when many people stayed isolated at home.

...sounds like it starts in the middle of a message and says “or press 5 to be removed from our list.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve gotten a few variations of this one. They can get pretty creative in trying to get a response.
A quick fix for these scam calls would be to make the phone companies liable for the fraud they allow to access their networks. Already my cell phone carrier gives me a warning about possible scam calls. Given a serious incentive I think the phone companies could find ways to block these calls especially where the scammer is using a phone number spoofer. In the past when I was getting a dozen auto warranty calls a day, I contacted the fraud division of the phone carrier listed for the number and raised hell that they were allowing fraud on their network. I noticed quickly that subsequent calls were from other networks.
It’s part of figuring out if the mark is willing to follow your directions. If they press 1, you know you have a sucker.
The few times I have played with them, I basically became an idiot with Dementia. “Where would I find this Amazon information? I don’t have a computer but my wife does. What’s her password? I don’t know it”
My aunt has no car, no credit cards and Dementia. She is basically 20 minutes of their time wasted.
We’ve received several.......we answer or play the recording and block.....for what good that does. These vermin change numbers like crazy. Lately they come up with our area code and the first 3 digits of our home phone I suppose trying to make us think it’s a neighbor or something. If they don’t have a name, they get blocked.
Snopes says there is not anything they can do with a recording of you saying "Yes".
Unless it's the NSA doing the recording.
It is just the beginning of a much more complex scam.
I recently got an email claiming to be from an old acquaintance I haven’t seen in at least fifteen years. He asked if I could buy a Visa gift card for his nephew’s birthday. My “friend” said he was out of town on business and was unable to purchase the card himself, but would pay me back when he was back in town. That might have been the most ridiculous scam I’ve ever come across. I can’t imagine anyone falling for it.
Amazon should get involved in its investigation.
