***by castrated priests***
In those days all of the priests were castrated, often by themselves. The followers of the grain “gods” Osiris, Tammuz, Attis, Adonis, Demeter and Dyonisus all had their body parts whacked off.

Well maybe that minator on Crete relocated. Hehe. Is there a Roman history ping list? If so please add me. The Romans were hyper- superstitious. Julius Caesar nearly had a mutiny on the first crossing over the English Channel out of fear of mythical creatures and magical druids. Caligula did face a mutiny and had the legions collect shells and rocks off the French coast (Gaul) and held a triumph, of course he was stark raving mad. Claudius who eventually got a permanent beach head had to threaten the legions with decimation. Great link. Thanks.

But the presence of oil lamps also suggests that the priests went near the cave at night, according to the researcher who found it, Francesco D'Andria. They might also have been handy for detecting areas deficient in oxygen, or, rather, with higher concentrations of carbon dioxide.

Looks like some CO2 agenda under the surface (literally), must have been rough on the livestock, and a complete waste of perfectly good meals.

There is a guy that has written books and is on youtube(Missing 411) that documents all sorts of missing people. Some of them under odd circumstances. (Although a lot of them to me are - yeah, people get lost in the woods.)

From the novel, Collateral Crimes:
They scurried towards the confluence, splashing and stumbling, and turned north around the bend at Tonto Creek. Jonathan looked back, but Jesse yanked on his arm and said, “Come on.” At first the Tonto deepened and they had to wade, then it narrowed and they had to scramble over loose gravel.
Jonathan looked back again and said, “He’s right behind us.”
They forged ahead, the canyon walls closing in, rising to a thousand feet on either side, the banks disappearing, the creek flowing faster as it filled the deep pools in their path.
There were in Hell’s Gate.
