he had seen a light “brighter than a thousand Suns," as well as the gravity of the situation. He learned about gravity, and then had a black-hole in his head.

Astounding! What an amazing and horrifying story, yet with an ending I did not expect. What an incredible man to live through such a thing!

kept the damage limited to an area of brain that he could live without. From the sound of it, he needed every brain cell available right before sticking in his head.

Compare and contrast to today’s world where people get “triggered” by “micro agressions” and make sure to let everyone know with this dude who gets zapped by a proton beam, and completes his work and goes home without telling anyone.

... a proton beam shot through the back of his head at close to the speed of light. I hate when that happens.

This is like an early prototype of a phaser. The setting was above “stun”, but below “kill”.

Got to love Soviet era nuclear physicists and the way they they approached their jobs. And this was before Chernobyl.

Did he become Dr.Manhattan ?
To: Red Badger
"July 13, 1978"Interesting to think the Soviets merely wanted to observe his death, precisely because they had proof-of-concept of a proton beam as a weapon. It is 43 years later and there are still only (deeply covered-up) rare instances of, let's just say, "focused light" military testing, or the actual uses thereof.
And yet, it's a certainty -- given Moore's Law if nothing else -- that this is fully battlefield-ready but (mostly) untested in conflict scenarios.
And as David Lee Roth once said, "Ed, there's never been a weapon that hasn't been fired in anger..."

Proves that even people with brain damage can get a Ph.D.
