Thousands of well-wishers waved off the Royal Navy's flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth as it set sail for exercises and its first operational deployment to the Far East.

The £3billion aircraft carrier - nicknamed 'Big Lizzie' - sailed out of Portsmouth Harbour in Hampshire to cheers from the crowds who filled the walls and the beaches.

There were few signs of social distancing among those who brandished Union Flags and held banners saying farewell to their loved ones who will be at sea for about seven months.

This might be the most powerful Royal Navy task force since the Falklands War. A squadron of US Marine F-35s are on board the Big Lizzie. A US Navy Arleigh Burke class destroyer is part of the task force too.

Even if just patrolling it is good to see the Royal Navy flex an operation of that size.

I had thought they’d retired their Carrier.

The Royal Navy did retire the Invincible Class carrier but now they have two Queen Elizabeth carriers designed to handle 40 F-35s.

I wonder if the Marine pilots and their support crew are eligible for the daily rum ration. :)

"I had thought they’d retired their Carrier."

They did, these are the two new ones -- Lizzy & Wales -- side by side:

The Lizzies are bigger than US America class assault carriers, but roughly 2/3 the displacement of a Ford, 80% the length & speed, about the same width.
They don't have catapults or unlimited range.

Here is Lizzy with Lightnings & Merlins onboard:

What are the lyrics to ‘Rule Britannia’?

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never will be slaves.

When Britain first, at heaven’s command,
Arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter of the land,
And Guardian Angels sang this strain:

(Chorus)

The nations not so blest as thee
Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall,
While thou shalt flourish great and free:
The dread and envy of them all.

(Chorus)

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke,
As the loud blast that tears the skies
Serves but to root thy native oak.

(Chorus)

Thee haughty tyrants ne’er shall tame;
All their attempts to bend thee down
Will but arouse thy generous flame,
But work their woe and thy renown.

(Chorus)

To thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles, thine.

(Chorus)

The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coasts repair.
Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.

(Chorus)

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never will be slaves.

And we wonder why there's a Chip shortage.

They are not blocking any commercial shipping from or to China. They have nothing to do with any shortage of any computer chips.

There is no shortage of chips. I went to my local grocery store and the snack aisle was full of them.

Just like HMS Prince of Wales was a show of force to Japan.

Assayons!

The Chinese are now going to get a whiff of grape from the Royal Navy if they screw around.

I bet Joe Biden still has the US Navy slinking around with its tail between its legs.

Britain is about to teach sock puppet Joe Biden a lesson in gun boat diplomacy.

Maybe we are both a bit on the pessimistic side. Because that was my first thought as well.

Good for the Brits! They’ll be around China and Japan in a few months; keep in mind China’s threats against Taiwan.

Seeing them next to the building provides the perspective necessary to realize just how big those carriers actually are. Great picture. 8>)
