The Star Wars prequels have had a rough couple of decades, from seemingly universal mockery to a renewed level of appreciation, as the audiences that watched them as children grew up and re-appraised their strengths and weaknesses. But now that we live in a more civilized age [?], it would seem, fondness for the films has helped Ewan McGregor re-appraise his own connection to the franchise.
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter in a wide-ranging profile as the actor prepares to return to his role as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi—living a life of exile on Tatooine in the self-titled Disney+ series, set a decade after Revenge of the Sith—McGregor reflected on how his excitement to be a part of Star Wars was, initially, dampened by fan reaction to the prequel films. “That was quite difficult. They were universally not very much liked.”
But times have changed, for both the actor and the prequels—not just because of their audiences growing up and reclaiming the trilogy as their own slice of Star Wars, but because over the years, the franchise itself has recontextualized and re-visited the storytelling of the era to flesh out the things that people appreciated most about its world, from shows like The Clone Wars to decades of books and comics.

They stunk then, they stink now, they will always stink.
I’m done with Star Wars after the firing of Gina Carrano, but Ewen McGregor was absolutely fantastic as a younger Obi-Wan.
The only Star Wars movie worth watching was the first one.
Prequels were bad then and they are bad now.
Just because the Sequels are awful doesn’t make I, II or III any better.
“The Empire Strikes Back” is the lynch pin that holds this house of cards together.
Ewan was good as young Obi-Wan though.
Enough with the Star War’s sequels. In fact enough with all the sequels. Is Hollyweird so bereft of original material as to keep rehashing the old ones?
Not that I’m going to pony up for theatre tix.,
That one guy on the team that just keeps trying to win no matter how badly the rest of the team has done and is doing...
Yep... That’s Ewan...
“The only Star Wars movie worth watching was the first one.”
I actually liked “The Empire Strikes Back” and thought it was a well done sequel with decent character development. “The Return of the Jedi” on the other hand... Well, let’s just say I saw where this thing was headed. From then on, it’s been endless sequels, prequels and a never ending merchandising jackpot.
The Mandalorian was looking good... Right up until they fired Gina...
I watched those prequels as a kid and I didn’t hate them but even I know they weren’t as good as the originals. Better than Disney sequels though so that’s something
Actually, the action animated series of The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels were pretty damn good.
Much better, actually, than the prequel movies they were based on.
They were certainly better written, and more competently performed.
...but Ewen McGregor was absolutely fantastic as a younger Obi-Wan.

Agree. In what was otherwise pretty lackluster prequels with odd casting choices, McGregor came across as what I thought a young Obi-Wan would be like.
Ewan McGregor was the only good thing about the prequels. Well, a lot of the visuals, sound FX, and music were pretty great.
The wooden acting, awful story, and terrible dialogue weren’t the fault of the actors.
Agreed. The firing of Gina Carano was the last straw for me.
I stuck with them until the Last Jedi. That was my final straw. Since then nada. Haven’t seen Solo which some here liked, Rise or the Mandalorian which again some have liked. It’s over for me. They could come out with the greatest shows in history and I won’t go see any of them anymore. My SW involvement now is down to commenting on threads here on FR and looking at funny memes on the internet.
He's obviously wants the rest of the world to have the same degree of social decay as he's accustomed to back home in Scotland.
The prequels should be burned in a dumpster, just like the Disney Star Wars garbage.
