Tabasco is ‘hot’? Who knew?
cholula and tapatio
In my time in the military, the cigarettes were gone, but Tabasco was always available in the dining facilities, snack bars, and MREs. It kind of became the go to for dressing up otherwise bland foods, and it becomes a "known," taste.
Ironically, when I left the military I relocated to Lafayette, Louisiana about 10-15 miles from the Tabasco plant on Avery Island, where one can sample and even purchase some of the newer Tabasco products before they hit the more widespread marketplace. There are a lot of other little local hot sauce companies in southern Louisiana that are on par, or perhaps even better than Tabasco, but Tabasco dominates the market with consistency and global distribution network.
Yes. Tabasco has a history going back to WW2 and was used to cover the non (or bad) flavor of rations. I became fond of it during my years in the USAF and have it on just about everything. Try sprinkling it over a dish then lean over and inhale... the Tabasco rush... have 911 nearby and may God have mercy on your soul.
It’s so easy to make your own.
Just brown some jalapeños, onions, plum tomatoes, garlic, and any other peppers you might like in a frying pan. Once browned/semi-charred toss into a blender or food processor and voilá. Adjust peppers and jalapeños for your desired level of hot.
I like Frank’s, too. You’re right — not too hot. And I buy smaller bottles in Dollar Tree - keeps it fresh.
There is no right or wrong answer to the question, "Is Tabasco the ideal hot sauce?" It is a matter of personal taste and everyone has their own personal taste. Some people do not even like hot sauce, and good for them. I like mayo, ketchup, mustard and all sorts of sauces and condiments. That's just personal taste.
I’m not a big fan of Tabasco products, but their tour of the Tabasco factory and facility at Avery Island, LA was quite interesting.

I want to go to there.
I’ll be in Galveston later this year. I’m really thinking about making a side trip to Avery Island at that time. But it’s a few hours away.
I'm looking at a bottle right now. Made in Mexico.
Frank’s is the ONLY sauce to use for ‘official’ chicken wings. I know, I live near the bar where they were invented and talked with the owner.
In a large Tupperware container add:
Tablespoon of Franks
tab of butter
large dash of red wine
teaspoon of sugar.
toss in 10 deep-fried to CRISPY wings, and shake
There are other delicious creations, but this is the original.
Tabasco. I tried most others , keep going back.
Tabasco is in a class all by itself. No other hot sauce tastes like it, no other hot sauce burns like it.
It’s like Dr. Pepper, you either love it or hate it, there is no in-between................
I had hundreds of those tiny tobasco bottles, unused
Dave’s Insanity.
