Spectacular ‘pink supermoon’ will hit the sky on Monday

The year’s only “pink supermoon” will hit its peak in the night sky Monday.

The lunar treat is one of the three most spectacular showings of the earthly satellite all year — appearing up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than regular moons.

Monday’s full spring-time moon won’t actually be pink — that’s just the moniker it earned from the Farmer’s Almanac because its appearance is timed around that of the pink North American wildflower moss phlox.

But it will be “super’’ to see because it is one of the few times of the year that the moon is so close to Earth.

This year’s “pink supermoon’’ will be at its finest glory around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

The other two annual “supermoons’’ are May’s “flower moon’’ and June’s “strawberry moon,’’ nicknamed for their seasons.

I’ve seen a few pink moons in my day but they weren’t celestial.

Moss Phlox

Wasn’t that one of the woke characters from Star Wars?

I do not want to know what that monolith's predecessor made the ape-men do to each other to try to evolve them.

If the Moon's orbit was perfectly circular, it would of course appear the same size every time it comes around. However, it's somewhat elliptical and so is further away from Earth at various times.

Oops. I thought that was the 2001 monolith gayed up, not a rainbow flag on the moon.

When did they start naming moons? Previously the only one I heard was Harvest Moon.

Different cultures have names for the full moons at different times of the year. The Harvest Moon is the one closest to the autumn equinox. The Hunter’s Moon is the first one after that.

The Starving Moon is April, because you’ve run out of stored food and nothing new is available. I know, let’s try eating stinging nettles. They’re green!
