Elephants ‘trample’ suspected poacher to death in South Africa

The man was one of three suspected rhino poachers whom park rangers were chasing through Kruger National Park at the time, SANParks said in a news release.

"When they realized they had been spotted, the suspected poachers dropped an axe and a bag with their provisions in an attempt to escape from the rangers," SANParks said.

The rangers pursued the three suspects with dogs and air support. They eventually caught up with one who said his accomplice had run into a herd of breeding elephants, but he did not know what happened after that.

Rangers went to the spot where the man was last seen and found that he had been "badly trampled," SANParks said.

It's unclear how many elephants were involved, but a single adult African elephant can weigh up to 3.3 tonnes .... Officials also recovered a rifle.

Good. I hope that discourages other poachers.

That’s sad. I hope that the elephant did not hurt itself.

"Dude, look, that bull elephant weighs three tons and gets laid three times a year and you're interrupting him. This is not the path of wisdom."

Hope the rifle was OK.

A suspected rhino poacher was killed in an elephant stampede at a South African national park on Saturday, officials said. The man was among three suspected poachers spotted by rangers at Kruger National Park, the parks service said in a Sunday press release. I suppose if you run headlong into breeding elephants there are worse options than just being trampled to death. Good riddance.

Some Freepers seem to express glee over this man's death.

Perhaps he was just trying to feed his family.

Maybe, his people hunted rhinos for thousands of years and all of a sudden some gubmin paper pusher tells him he can't.

Maybe the rhinos were destroying food crops or becoming aggressive toward people.

Native Americans are allowed to hunt whales and eagles but you do it and you'll be put away for a long time.

Would they feel the same about an Idaho rancher that kills wolves or a grizzly, "illegally" that are killing his animals or endangering his family?

Nice to see swift savanna justice but the Chinese are on the move in Africa. Elephants won’t stand a chance.

The poachers don’t go after the elephants because they’re some kind of threat, and they don’t hunt for food, all they want is the ivory

That’s what the axe was for ... to chop off the tusks once the animal is down, whether it’s dead or not

Good riddance ... one less poacher = one less monster
