The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Easter lilies do well in my part of Florida.
They can be bought cheaply as remainders around Eastertime.
Thanks, Pete!
Re: Amaryllis.
When I was vacationing on the island of Kauai, HI I was STUNNED to see Amaryllis growing wild in the ditches along the roads, as plentiful as the ‘Orange Ditch Lilies’ that grow around here. ;)
My Mom has a huge patch of Easter Lilies in her back yard; she’d always plant them from plants we had given her, or leftovers from her church altar after Easter Sunday.
It’s really pretty when it’s all in bloom.
Gosh Lib Whacker, I really don’t get this fascination with body modification! :)
Wow! Those are very festive looking tomatoes.
😊Nice to see your pic. I was doing some double digging today too. Decided to plant another raised bed in taters. Got some russets. Taters are one of the best returns for effort involved here. Coons, bushy tailed rodents and other critters tend to win our battles for produce-but so far taters, garlic, winter wheat and rye all make it to maturity for us to enjoy.
I may have to plant hubby’s tater patch too. He’s too busy working on the glorified shed - putting up soffit and siding. He’ll be 81 soon-and still finishes concrete.
You and I have fortunately married “super” people. Ha.
She also bakes a mean pie!

Another 5” of snow, and hard freeze last week; another snowy day tomorrow. At least it goes away rather quickly.
On the bright side, over half of my tilling is done; I have my fertilizers, seeds & seed potatoes, and straw bales in hand; and the coffee can of leeks sprouted in record time.
While tilling before last week’s snow hit, I found several clumps of volunteer garlic I’ll have to lift & separate.
So far, the fruit trees have had the good sense to not try blooming during our (too) early warm spells.
Hi!
I just now saw your reply - and didn’t realize my kitty was in the photo. She follows me around everywhere in the yard.
The yellow rose is called “Henry Fonda” - I planted it for my mother after she died in 2019, yellow roses were her favorite. It has performed magnificently, my mother must be watching over it.
Mostly cool and damp here in Central Missouri over the past week. My morel picking spots are just starting to produce. Mrs. Augie and I caught enough on Saturday to fill one medium size skillet at supper time.
The garden was almost dry enough to put some seeds in the ground and then it rained. Tomato plants have been secured and re-potted. They are happy on the patio in spite of the cool nights we’ve been having.
Weather guessers think it’s going to snow tomorrow night.
Very nice! I like to plant things in memory of others, too.
Our Foster Son was here all weekend and set up scaffolding and prepped windows in anticipation of FINISHING the painting of our house. This is Year Three. *Rolleyes*
Got a lot of weeding done and all of the raised beds are ready to receive. I also gave the roses their first dose of go-go juice which fertilizes them, protects against disease and then later, those awful Japanese Beetles. Beau is devising a weed barrier for the six free-standing medicinal roses I planted in a row where he tore out the Currant bushes. The Currants were re-planted for wildlife along our main driveway. I'm too old to pick microscopic berries that never amount to much, anyway! I still have to prune my raspberry canes down to the ground - should've done that sooner.
Seedlings are coming along great in the greenhouse, though I have been giving everyone additional cover, as our nights are still so chilly. The only things I still need to start are Melons and Winter Squashes in another week or so and then my seed starting is over. Zukes and Cukes were started this weekend. Rhubarb is up, so are strawberries and asparagus, but not by much, yet.
Weather is cooling off again, but our weather pattern has been leaving the weekends really nice for the few remaining Working Stiffs still able to have jobs in Wisconsin as we remain under Totalitarian Socialist Democrat Rule. Blech!
And I forgot to mention the continuing battle with the Bird Feeder Gang. This one is #3. He's now incarcerated in my freezer with #1 and #2. I think there's one more on the loose...
Booger is adorable. Such pretty markings! :)
I hear ya on the raccoons. We don’t raise Treeing Walker Coon Hounds for no reason! ;)
