N.M.- A New Mexico physicist believes the state has already hit herd immunity.
Dr. Jacob Kuriyan wrote an opinion piece in the Albuquerque Journal that said he believes New Mexico hit herd immunity in March.
"Herd immunity is a point that is defined in the development of a pandemic or epidemic which says that at some point the number of people infected is less than the number of people that are recovering," he said.
Kuriyan has a background in theoretical physics and heads two healthcare software companies in the metro area.
New Mexico physicist believes state has technically reached herd immunity Using the SIR Model, which is used to track epidemics, herd immunity can be observed when 25% of the population has been vaccinated or recovered from the disease.
Currently, 35% of New Mexican are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
"This is beginning, what I call, a beginning of a journey, not the destination, so it is absolutely required, but that doesn't guarantee that the pandemic will end, it just says it the beginning of the end," Kuriyan said.
Kuriyan warns that people should still heed the warnings of health officials like social distancing and wearing a mask to continue the downward trajectory.
In response to Kuriyan's assertion that the state has reached herd immunity, a spokesperson for the New Mexico Department of Health released the following statement:
"The author appears to be using the term ‘herd immunity’ differently than DOH and national medical experts are.
While it’s true that vaccines have reduced case counts and deaths, we’re not just interested in ‘when the epidemic size decreases."
The statement points to a New York Times article that says "heath experts say somewhere between 70 to 90 percent of people in a society need to be vaccinated to arrive at herd immunity, a situation in which most of a population is immune to an infectious disease, providing indirect protection to those who are not immune.”
NM currently has 35% of it’s citizens ‘vax’d’....yet, article quotes a NY Post article saying 70-90% need to have had the experimental shot, to obtain herd immunity.
Keep at it, NM sheeple! You’re almost there!
😵
Pshaw! Why listen to a mere theoretical physicist when I can get real news from a two digit IQ CNN clown? That’s how we all should “follow the science”. /s
“Keep at it, NM sheeple! You’re almost there!”
LOL. Yeah for a non-existent pandemic. lol
Time to turn up the sensitivity of the PCR test and demand “testing testing testing” again!
Two weeks to “slow the curve” is now “two years to completely eradicate a cold virus that changes sometimes”.
I’m trying to figure out what ‘technically reached’ means.
Sure seems that way.
The “elephant in the room” that the media always hides is immunities from exposure to the virus.
“Wild” immunity.
Vaccines are the safest, but not the only, way to get immunized.
It’s a serious and obvious cover-up that actually hurts efforts to end this.
Technically means if your 98 year old grandma had chills and fever 30 days before she dies a heart failure, you get $9,000 from FEMA for a funeral, and grandma always wanted a Funeral in Hawaii, therefore Covid aint going away anytime soon.
All of my relatives that live in NM have had Covid. my Niece works on a covid ward and got it twice.
Because of the incentives given for “dying with Covid” when you get to less than 5 deaths/day in a state and don’t spike up to 10/day on a 7 day rolling average, you can call herd immunity and get back to normal.
If people are skeert, they can keep themselves locked up.

I, for one, refuse to get involved with the fear porn!
Good for you!
Add the people who have officially had Covid, plus those who have had it and aren’t in the official counts (many, many mild cases) and they’re likely in that 70-90% range.
Everyone that is scared of the virus in the US should be vaccinated by now. They are vaccinating anyone over 18 in Texas that wants it (and some that don’t, but have to in order to pay $40K/year+ for college).
Old and vulnerable could get it months ago. The trick with any new vaccine is you get it early as you can, before all of the horror stories come out. Odds are you won’t be a horror story, unless you take the Moderna vaccine, then odds are better than even your life is going to absolutely suck for 3 days.
My husband has had the first of Moderna; no real problems.
What were your ‘3 days’ like? First or second jab?
Herd immunity may be what science is trying to prevent.
My wife, who didn’t get Covid, took the first one fine, but the second she didn’t get out of bet for 3 days. I got Covid, I was lazy/sleepy but never had pain that bad.
My boss, who had Covid, said he was “sicker than at any time in the last 25 years” and was out of work for 3 days, on the first shot. He described the pain as what “fibromyalgia” must feel like.
Your results may vary. My parents god 2 shots of Pfizer with no issues. Everyone else I know got Covid or Pfizer.
You mean in Texas college students have to get it, or they can only get scholarships if they get it?
