A study by researchers in California who examined more than 48,000 adult patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 from January 2020 through October 2020 shows that lack of exercise in the years prior to them contracting COVID-19 made them more likely to be hospitalized or die of the illness. “Patients with COVID-19 who were consistently inactive had a greater risk of hospitalization, admission to the ICU and death due to COVID-19 than patients who were consistently meeting physical activity guidelines,” the researchers from the Department of Family and Sports Medicine, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Fontana wrote in the study, which was published this week by the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Even moderate exercise was seen as a positive for those who contracted COVID-19. “Patients who were consistently inactive also had a greater risk of hospitalization admission to the ICU and death due to COVID-19 than patients who were doing some physical activity,” the report said.
The average age of patients observed in the study was 47 and 60 percent were women. In terms of body mass index, or BMI, the average of those studied was 31, which is just above the level that is considered obese in the U.S. The researchers relied on self-reporting from patients on the amount of exercise they either did or didn’t do over the two years prior to the COVID-19 diagnosis. According to the researchers, a lack of physical activity was a more serious risk factor than most of those outlined by the CDC, including “advanced age, sex (male) and the presence of underlying comorbidities, such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.” Only advanced age and a history of organ transplant were greater risks than physical activity, the study showed.
The government should be able to mandate that those obese exercise and diet and they don’t need passports.
the title made me lol...
Congratulations on your weight loss. Now you can starting looking for a diet plan that you can easily live with, one that allows you a few ‘emergency treats’ every so often.
This is the significant lesson of COVID-19. If you just close your front door and sit on your butt to avoid catching COVID-19, but then catch COVID-19, your chances of serious disease or death increase exponentially. You have to exercise.
Lol. Then there are guys like me who caught it at the gym.
Was over it in 5 days. No big deal.
Did completely lose my sense of smell and slept A LOT.
Well it was nice knowing y’all.
***Much agreed! And I haven’t seen people going for strolls in their own neighborhoods for decades. It’s as if they’re hiding in their houses and cars and waiting for other people to be mauled by each other’s bad dogs or attacked by neighborhood drug addicts. Pathetic.***
I must live in an unusual neighborhood. A LOT of people walk around here every day, before CoVid and throughout the lockdowns. My husband and I would go irregularly before CoVid. Now we walk the neighborhood or a nearby park almost every day, even during a bit of crummy weather. (Although I’m not much excited about walking outdoors when it gets into the single digits or lower. That’s not much fun at all. )
Bottom line, CoVid made me realize that the best way to fight CoVid was to help my body be the healthiest it can be.
Unhealthy people would be the first to go.
Who knew?
That’s the reason we try to be as healthy as we can be — especially as we get older.
No need for more funding for further studies. Most can figure it out themselves — no need for the Gates and Faucis to advise on exercise.
Goes back to obesity and oxygen saturation capability
Exercise also helps the lymph system work better
I have my workout space at my house. Covid, schmovid.
Then I should be dead.
I call BS. The other factors cited elsewhere, however, fit well. Had my mother in-law - who is in an assisted care facility and has both a form of dementia and has had at least one stroke which has impacted her speech - not lost over 200lbs since going to the facility, I truly believe that she would not have survived the virus.
But she’s alive, too.
Thank God for Peleton- that is a serious workout
when you have a German Shep-you r gonna be walking or they will chew your house down
“shows that lack of exercise in the years prior to them contracting COVID-19 made them more likely to be hospitalized o r die of the illness.“
This would be true of every illness .
Being fit means you are healthier !
It’s always true
Bkmk
Not only, but closed parks, forest trails, beaches etc. and exhorted "shelter in place" and or requires masking whenever outside, and each and all of which fostered lack of exercise and increased weight again. But Trump and or the government must be blamed for what is usually due to the person's own self-indulgence.
I’ve had three Great Danes. Two actually chewed a four by four until it was round. I had an English Mastiff that though water hoses tasted great.

Good advice. My weight has been stable for six months. I have gained five pounds but the fancy scales says that’s all muscle gain. I have been going to the gym five/six days a week so I’m happy with that.
