The coronavirus and the flu are two entirely different viruses. But a new study suggests those who get a flu vaccine face a considerably lower risk for being hospitalized if and when they get COVID-19.
And the flu vaccine also appears to significantly reduce a COVID-19 patient's risk for ending up in an intensive care unit (ICU), researchers say.
"COVID patients who had not received a flu vaccine within the last year had 2.4 times greater odds of being hospitalized and 3.3 times greater chance of being transferred to the ICU," said Yang, a third-year resident in family medicine in the department of community health and family medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
As to how a vaccine for an entirely different virus might offer such protection, Yang said the jury is still out. Also, the study did not prove that a flu vaccine actually caused the risk of severe COVID-19 to drop, just that there was an association.
"Unfortunately, we do not know why the flu vaccine would have this beneficial side effect," he said. "Our study did not look at this specifically. [But] if one looks at the available scientific studies, we can guess that the flu vaccine might increase natural killer cell activity, a type of immune cell that has been shown to target cancer and cells infected by viruses."

There was another thread today that said people with the flu shot are more likely to catch Covid.
So I can reduce my odds of hospitalization by 42% (1/2.4) just by getting the flu shot. Good to know.
I’ve seen that, but there are quite a few articles attesting to the Flu Shot being beneficial with very compelling statistics of ICU rates, etc...
And while I have to do more research. I’ve heard even on FR of people being advised by doctors to get vaccinated against pneumonia as well as an add-on for *potential* protection against (severe) Covid.
When it comes to Covid, there is a whole lot of:

The fact is the CDC, Fauci, and all the other experts are pulling data out of the *** on a daily basis.
They really don’t know what the hell is going on.

Yes, but if the “may, might, should” applies to cheap and easily accessible & tested drugs/shots beneficial for other things —> then that’s helpful for those who are still on edge about the newer, experimental vaccines. Especially if in the age group or health status that has a promising outcome against the virus to begin with.

Vitamin D. Zinc, etc. will also shield you. Not may. WILL.
My wife have been driving all over the country and at age 67 we don’t wear masks and don’t even think about getting the virus. We’re not obese and we eat well - and are aware of what keeps viruses at bay.
And isn’t it funny that the regular flu has just affected a few hundred people over the past twelve months?
Instead of tens of thousands?
A different study conducted for the U.S. military also looked at folks who had tested Covid19 positive and hospitalized Covid19 patients, and it found the opposite results - 36% greater likelihood of being hospitalized if Covid19 infected AND had a previous flu vaccination.
Researchers involved in both these studies need to work together on a larger and more rigorous study and try to resolve their different results.

Mask might help ... so lets require everyone to wear a mask. Vaccines might not be harmful but lets require them anyway. Other drugs might work...

Really? I guess my husband would have died for sure. He had a flu shot and got a severe case of covid and almost died. He has no other comorbidities.
I got a flu shot, no other comorbidities and got quite a mild case of covid.
Some people get it bad and some don’t. I’m still waiting for a valid reason why.

yes I saw that article. Those vaccinated 2018-2019 for the flu were around 38% more likely to get Covid-19
Well the Flu shot does have a longer history compare to the Covid shot.
