North Korea raps U.S. for infringing on right to "self-defense"

Beijing - North Korea on Saturday criticized the United States for abusing the country's "right to self-defense," days after President Joe Biden said Pyongyang's latest launch of ballistic missiles violated U.N. Security Council resolutions.

"The new U.S. administration obviously took its first step wrong," Ri Pyong Chol, secretary of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, said in a statement carried in English by the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

"We cannot but build invincible physical power for reliably defending the security of our state under the present situation in which South Korea and the U.S. constantly pose military threats to the Korean peninsula," Ri said.

Ri, who has led North Korea's nuclear and missile development, is regarded as a close aide to leader Kim Jong Un. The statement, dated Friday, underscores Pyongyang's eagerness to continue to strengthen its military capacity to counter the United States.

"It is a gangster-like logic that it is allowable for the U.S. to ship the strategic nuclear assets into the Korean peninsula and launch ICBMs any time it wants but not allowable for the DPRK," referring to intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The headline sounded like North Korea was commenting on Joe Biden’s executive orders regarding gun control here in the US.

It is not ideologically consistent to dictate the military power of other sovereign nations. Once we let the Russians have the bomb in 1949, and then the Chinese by 1960, the cat is way out of the bag.

The thought of what North Korea might do with their bombs, does not give us the right to disarm them. If you believe that, then you believe the US government has the same right to confiscate our guns.

Your position is unsustainable. Particularly in the area of the massive proliferation threat they will become (have been becoming) in the Middle East or with non-state terrorist actors. It is a nightmare and to let it alone or throw up our hands is a most foolish course to embark upon.

April 15 is coming up, the date of North Korea’s ‘Day of the Sun’ holiday — and when I understand the U.S. policy review will be finished by. Given chatter at the moment about the possibility of a pending North Korean SLBM test, could be a good time for DPRK to test something.
