In years past, before the illegal immigration invasion of the 1980’s (which hasn’t stopped), America largely ignored Soccer. Due to the general wealth of the USA, Americans enjoyed numerous other sports, all of which require a bit of money to play with equipment costs, uniforms, specialty grounds etc...

American’s also enjoyed boxing and horse racing. Tastes change. Baseball has seen a massive drop is popularity and has been forced to import “third world” players to offset that.

This was a special under 23 years old tournament and big teams in Europe do not have to let their players play. Our top 5 under 23 years old players would almost certainly have smoked Honduras U23. But they didn’t play because they play for Barcelona in Spain, Chelsea in England, Juventus in Italy, etc.

There is a big rivalry between the Olympics and the soccer World Cup. The World Cup people do not want the Olympic soccer to get too popular and start to compete with the world cup.

Did they at least look good kneeling for the national anthem? If so then they can consider that as a win.

For decades we are told how much improved the American national soccer team is.
Crappola.
Consistantly some very small country kicks our ass.
Nearly 300,000,000 Americans and we can’t put together a decent team?
You betcha.

Not surprised. Soccer is about acting; flopping around on the ground pretending to be injured in order to draw a penalty on the opposing team, in a desperate attempt to gain an advantage in a game that's likely to end 0-0 and go to shootouts.

With smartphones and the interwebs, the actors who would have gone into soccer have gone to TikTok, Instagram, etc.

Loud mouthed no-norhings, and less than honest refs have a stranglehold on youth soccer in America. Trust me....

Everyone going to the olympics have to qualify. Or did you think that countries just point at some guy and say, “You are the marathon runner....”

It hasn’t worked like that for more than 100 years.

The vapid ignorance on this thread is hardly surprising, since I bet most of those posting are fine with watching a sport that requires mealworm length attention spans i.e. “American Football”, golf, or baseball.

A typical soccer player can run any other team sports athlete into the ground in less than 10 minutes.

More people have died playing the sport than “American” sports.

Most people also don’t know that soccer almost became our national sport in the 1880s, but the Ivy Leagues opted for a cross of it with Rugby. There are plenty of books out there regarding that. It’s how “football” (bastardized name) was invented.

The men’s team did not kneel. Otherwise I would have just turned it off at that point.

I would rather see soccer expand than endure any more preening and pompous nonsense from over paid and under civilized professional football and basketball players.

< i>A typical soccer player can run any other team sports athlete into the ground in less than 10 minutes.

A pretty broad brush. Collegiate lacrosse is a pretty intense sport and players are always on the move, as besides passing, they have to advance with the lacrosse ball. I dare say they do more running than soccer players.
