The whitefly would... ingest those phenolic glycosides when feeding on the tomato plant and that would usually kill it. But the BtPMaT1 gene neutralizes these toxins, so the whitefly can continue to destroy crops undisturbed. Essentially, the whitefly incorporated the plant’s defense mechanism into its own genome to beat the plant....

That on the surface is no proof of anything. Maybe they just need a better science writer. How about explaining the outcome of their test versus the control group.
They might have explained how they knew that whitefly (B. tabachi) did not have that DNA incorporation in past generations. How can feeding whitefly (B. tabachi) the same diet that it had been naturally feeding on prove jack squat?

The above is most certainly not how they proved the fly got the gene from the plant. That describes evidence to support the idea that the fly got an enzyme from the plant, but doesn’t even get to the DNA level yet.
Done is a lab and released. That is my guess.

I don’t follow the logic of this article. The plants have a gene which produces a toxin that kills whiteflies. If the whiteflies acquired this gene they would make a toxin that kills whiteflies and the larva would die before the fly even matured.
What the whiteflies acquired was something (either a gene or epigenetic change that persisted in offspring) that blocked the action of the plant toxin from disrupting the whiteflies metabolism and killing it. This happens all the time in nature and is called descent with modification (mutations). Any whiteflies with this mutation would thrive and displace any whiteflies that were still killed by the plant toxin. Either I missed something or this article is woefully confused in its explanation.

This article is only written as a defense of GMO products. I'm all for GMO, but they don't need to create thinly veiled propaganda articles to support it for the dumb masses.
