Toll gates at every corner? Meters attached to every vehicle? How are they going to do this?

For vehicles connected to the internet, the govt can just read the accumulated mileage. For old school iron, you’ll have to visit an inspection station every year to get tabulated. Like the TSA it will provide thousands of unionized federal jobs.

Sounds like the new tax will be instituted to pay for the methods of collection of the tax. Think of all the new productive jobs that it creates!

You may want to do your calculations again. You don’t think they’re going to let go of any of those old taxes do you?

I bet they mandate a GPS device be installed in every car and weekly payments. People would revolt if there was an annual payment.

State Farm keeps trying to get me to put these in my vehicles. No way in hell am I going to let them monitor my places I go, my speed in getting there, and when I go. Not going to happen.

Alcohol and tobacco tax or essentially behavior taxes.

And, how about requirement that all of these mileage taxes go solely to building and maintenance of roads

That's what they did with tolls the NJ Turnpike and Garden State expressway in New Jersey. They were chartered to use tolls to pay for the construction and then the tolls would go away. They never did, for decades they just kept adding to the roads, spurs that went nowhere, just to keep that toll money coming in. Now they don't even bother with that. Those temporary tolls are damned permanent.

And so too will any new tax be.

The New Jersey Turnpike's revenue bonds expired in 1995. At that point, the tolls could have come off, but then the state DOT would have had to pay for all the work necessary to maintain the physical plant of the turnpike. That would have meant a gas tax hike. Gov. Whitman decided to let the Turnpike Commission float another set of revenue bonds to pay for them. I believe those bonds will be paid off in 2025. At that point, a similar decision will have to be made.

The Garden State Parkway's charter permits it to exist in perpetuity with the counties through which the Parkway runs getting a cut of the proceeds.

But I don’t think that the Feds can force the states to collect this tax for them.

Absolutely they can ... hold my beer 'n watch this: All they have to do is the exact same thing they did when they wanted the legal drinking age across the country raised to 21: withhold federal highway funds until states agree to collect the tax and pass it through to the Feds.

See how easy that was?

All you have to do is be as old as I am with a memory as long as mine to know exactly what these bastards are going to do.

I don’t give a damn if State Farm knows all the places I visit. They don’t pay my bills, so who cares.

But you are missing out $80 yearly discount for each vehicle you have insurance from State Farm. I am getting roughly $40 discount every 6 month billing cycle.

Same way State Farm Insurance outfit monitors how many miles I drive and how bad are my driving habits. They sent me a small electronic gadget to stick on any flat surface in car. It is tiny, about 3/4”x3/4”x 3/16” thick.

Increased fuel prices affect every day people directly and indirectly. Transportation isn’t free (nothing is “free”). Companies pay more to transport goods and pass the costs along to the consumer.
