For those who might not know, first, there are quartz crystal balls, and there are the more see-through lead crystal balls. The photo made it difficult to see which that one was, but I will hazard to say ‘lead crystal’.

Quartz crystal balls do have formations in them, but the common practice is to keep them out of sunlight and covered with a dark cloth.

This reminds me of the liquor store fire started by vodka bottles in sunlight.

Gee! I hope I won’t have any problems with the open containers of gasoline, oily rags and lit candles I leave unattended in MY Living Room! *SMIRK*

Glad everyone is OK, though. What a freak accident.

And, come on. Who among us hasn’t played with a magnifying glass in the hot summer sun, starting the lawn and such on fire, or at least challenging your sibling to see who could ‘stand it’ the longest with the laser beam focused on their arm?

It’s SCIENCE! :)

My Mom: “Why do you kids ALWAYS smell like burned hot dogs when you come in for supper?”

This may be the one time that if someone had just gazed into the crystal ball, they really could have seen the future and prevented it.

I personally know the people who this happened to. They are a wonderful couple who own several businesses in the Dells and treat their employees like family. The wife is an artist and although covered in ashes, it reflects in the decor. Their strong faith has helped them thru this tragedy.

When I was a teenager, I was at my grandparents house and noticed a little wisp of smoke outside at the carpeted steps to the front door. They had one of those 5 gallon glass jugs full of water, that you got from Arrowhead back then, sitting on the front porch, and the sun was shining through it, was focused by the bottle and water, and had burned a spot in the carpet. Still remember that, almost 50 years later.

And I miss my grandparents.

We had a mirror that magnifies your face in a room . The sun hit it just right and it left a burn trail as the sun moved. Fortunately at no point did it get hot enough to start a fire.

You can almost get a hole burned right through you walking by certain windows installed on homes today if the sun hits them right.

Luckily, they knew this was going to happen ahead of time.
