* Novavax's vaccine was 89.7% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19 in a late-stage trial.
* Novavax said the vaccine was 86.3% effective against B.1.1.7, the variant first found in the UK.
* US biotech Novavax's COVID-19 shot has not yet been approved by regulators.
Novavax's COVID-19 vaccine was 89.7% effective at preventing COVID-19 with symptoms in a trial of more than 15,000 people, the US biotech announced Thursday.
The shot held up against the highly contagious coronavirus variant circulating in the UK and the US, called B.1.1.7, Novavax said. The vaccine worked 86.3% of the time against this particular variant, Novavax said in a press release.
The shot was 96.4% effective against the original virus strain, it said.
The company said that its vaccine was 48.6% effective in a smaller trial of around 2,600 participants in South Africa, where another variant, called B.1.351, is circulating. Its efficacy was slightly higher in those who were HIV-negative, at 55.4%.
There is some evidence that B.1.351, which is circulating in 48 countries and 23 states in the US, can partially evade antibodies.
The company said that the shot provided 100% protection across both trials against severe disease, including all hospitalization and death. But the numbers were small - there were five people with severe disease in the group that received a placebo instead of the vaccine.
"Importantly, both studies confirmed efficacy against the variant strains," Stanley Erck, chief executive officer at Novavax, said.

MORE INFORMATION:
* Novavax’s vaccine combines an engineered form of the virus with a plant-based ingredient to generate an immune response. The vaccine can be stored at normal temperatures.
* Novavax has said previously that it hopes to produce its shot at a rate of 2 billion doses a year by the middle of 2021, though it’s not clear how many shots the company could actually make this year.
we were waiting for this novavax due to some concerns with the long term possibilities from the first two mRNA type vaccines.
however, the wait has been very long despite the good novavax trial results
it now appears that the fda will keep going slow on it (and yes I am one that does not like it when they rush approvals too fast, so its a bit of a paradox)
we are somewhat helplessly dependent on these bureaucraps in this, and other matters ... not much as individuals out here we can do
we have made appointment for the existing 2 shot mRNA thing since it is available. praying our concerns prove incorrect
Government is the disease
You are the cure
99.997% of the time
Which makes you more effective than Moderna or Novavax...
“the company would probably file for approval in the UK first, in about April, before submitting data to the US Food and Drug Administration as soon as May.”
This is later than was expected a month ago. Then they were expecting to request US authorization in April, as was AstraZeneca.
These kinds of effectiveness numbers seem to make Novavax a shoo-in for authorization, as has been expected.
Maybe they are slipping the date of US authorization, as political cover, for allowing early production to go elsewhere (e.g., more deserving poorer countries, or somewhere that is giving kickbacks to Hunter).
Can I be inoculated from Government?
Yes. It seems that approvals are all slowed down. Tough for us since we wanted that traditional style vaccine instead of being in effect just another Guinean pig for the never-tried- before in mass vaccinations mRNA vaccines. I guess sometimes we just don’t get things the way we hope. I know it is impossible to get government to do almost anything
Ping to Novavax information.
This is the safest vaccine in the field.
None are currently FDA approved.
Thanks...got it!
Research, research, research.
Don’t submit to any vaccine until its safety has been proven satisfactorily.
Read reports from other countries.
Do not put your faith in Fauci, Gates, or the US media.
RE: we were waiting for this novavax due to some concerns with the long term possibilities from the first two mRNA type vaccines.
Why are you not considering Johnson & Johnson’s non-mRNA vaccine?
We were considering J and J. However it reported lower results than the other three. So it’s a difficult choice - I’m unsure which choice is best
Ivermectin is perfectly safe.
Stop lying just stop the CFR is not 0.003% never was prove it.
The real death rate John’s Hopkins University the world authority on endemic diseases is 1.8% and much higher for at risk groups with comorbidities.

Now, back to being called a liar.
You are the liar and a sniveling SoS.
The death rate you quoted includes everyone over the age of 80.
Once you exclude them the death rate is the same for the flu.
Even if we use your death rate your body is still more effective than Moderna
