Weekly Garden Thread - March 13-19, 2021
March 13, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 03/13/2021 6:57:08 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Five of the pepper plants I had taken inside before winter have survived, and as of yesterday, are now in larger pots on the east-facing porch (still portable if a cold snap or other bad weather comes.)

Something weird: One of the plants already has 2 or 3 blossoms. It’s physically impossible for blossoms to appear in the space of one day. Therefore, even as anal-retentive and vigilant as I am, I must have somehow overlooked the buds when the plants were still in the house. :-)

Temps go up to 100 during the warm days. One lime fruit has set but not many others. lemon tree has two lemons and now getting buds. The improved meyers are excellent lemons.

“The improved Meyer are excellent lemons.”

Agreed! Jung’s had them for sale this season, but they sold out quickly!

Good Morning!

We’ve had beautiful Spring Weather here...but it’s New England, known for St. Patty’s Day and Easter Blizzards, so I’m being careful about my planting. :-)

LOL! I was getting a little cocky this past week, too. Now? Snow predicted for Monday. Just a couple of inches, though. (SW corner of Wisconsin.) One sub-zero week and one 10" snow storm; it's been a relatively easy winter for us.

Of course it's going to snow! My Robins are back, I've heard cranes and geese and saw a beautiful Ring Necked Pheasant, yesterday!

Transplanted the first cabbage outdoors. Not sure if it’s too early so I’m going to put one out each week or maybe every few days. It’s getting crowded under the grow lights and in the south window due to my over eagerness to start seeds. :P

We got an email last Sunday night with a picture attached from a neighbor at our lake place. There is/was a giant pine tree down on one of our sheds. It is such a big tree, that even at a 45 degree angle, it was hanging over the yard & above the electric service to the house!

To make a long story short, after scrambling all week, a crew is working as I type, taking down that tree. They needed an 80 ft. bucket (looks like a giant spider). The electric service is safe .... they’re working over the shed roof now so the chunks are big/heavy. Hopefully, the knot I’ve had in my stomach since last Sunday night will be gone as the last of the tree is removed! Family members will be at the lake next weekend to repair the shed roof. Now, all we have to do is get the insurance company “moving”.

Warm week - got some weeding done in the Hummingbird Garden. The weeds were from last fall - should have pulled them back then. I tried weeding earlier this year, but the ground was frozen. It was sunny & got hot - actually had to put on a long-sleeved shirt over my tank top to keep from getting a sunburn. I also dug out a very wet (too wet) compost pile & spread it on tarps to dry out some - as it dries, I’m putting it back in the bin. That was & continues to be a major job - lots of pitchfork work/bicep workout.

Put up a new bluebird house Monday to replace a 30 year old half-rotten one they’ve been using. Yesterday, I saw Papa BB flying out of the house so I hope they’re doing some nest building. Spotted the first daffodil this morning so Spring is on the way :-)

Ooooo! Thank you! I have two stock panels in a large ‘V’ shape. I grow Sweet Peas, shelling peas and then cucumbers on it. I have a second one in the garden where I want to grow a climbing rose, but so far it hasn’t worked out so well. :(

Maybe an annual climber for the Hummingbirds will work better in that spot.

I’ve seen some Robins and Cranes too. My crocuses are blooming and the tulips are pushing through. Early signs of spring in SE Wisconsin. The squirrels and birds are hungry as always.

A.R. Climbing roses.... (sort of humor slide!)

To impress, consider "Pauls Himalayan Climber Musk Rose", the apex predator of Climbing Roses! (Lots of room and small tree recommended for support! :)

Thanks for the ping. Sorry I don’t know how to size up the picture posts- in fact, I don’t know how to do them at all and have to use the imgflip meme.

We have had mostly rain this week and for the next few days and next week—we get not only cloudy, rainy but decreased temperatures. This AM, the rain has stopped for now, and we were able to take out the trash bags and compost that was in the greenhouse. Got busy and straightened up the green house, and swept the floor.

Garlic is looking good, Will probably take the straw off week after next. Hubby has promised to give a priority to moving the compost pile to the bed where we planted corn last year. Also the rain was bad enough that a trench was created right through the bed that I was getting ready to plant — so hubby has promised to fix that with high priority. Ha.🤣

Fortunately, he’s a bit better with gardening priorities than he is with house maintenance. I have 3 lemons left that are ripe enough to eat, and one on the second tree that is getting there. Will be repotting the older tree and trimming it down—it’s getting too bushy and I have to keep it house size.

I have about an 8 qt. bag of potting mix planted with lettuce and under the plastic container—like you did with the big bags a few months back. A container of beets is started in a planter in the greenhouse.

I have some carrot seeds that I’m sprouting inside paper towels that I will plant in containers also. I’m seriously gonna have to consider getting pellet sized seeds or seed tape—those little tiny seeds are beginning to get on my last nerve.

We have a 6 ft. octagon planter in the front yard that hubby built last year—That’s on the North east side of the house. I’d like to plant some edible flowers/pretty plants, so have been researching what might work-perennials preferred.

We have our yukon gold and russet potatoes in some boxes in the basement kitchen to let the eyes get going -target date for planting is 4/01—and the bed was ready to receive, but now has a 4 inch trench down the middle.

My Ninja food processor was damaged in shipment, so the order was cancelled. After further research, I decided to go with a Cuisinart which is a bit larger and sturdier and it came in a day or so ago—so I am reading through the instructions to see which feature I am going to try first.

I am working on getting the freezer space freed up. So finished canning a batch of stewed tomatoes using the Emeril pressure/fryer combo that oldest daughter gave us for Christmas. Have a few more batches to go for the tomatoes.
Also, pulled out some shanks from the freezer, and made a soup - we’ll get several meals out of that. Life is good. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
