‘I won’t go back’: New Walmart checkout policy called racially biased

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (KDVR) — A new checkout policy at the Walmart in Centennial is under scrutiny for its security measures around beauty products for people of color.
The allegations of racial bias come almost a year after Walmart changed is practice on locking up beauty products for people of color at its stores.
“I honestly will probably not go back there again because of how I felt,” said Rachel from Aurora, who visited the Walmart store around 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
Rachel was purchasing shampoo in the beauty products for people of color aisle when allegedly stopped by a clerk who told her she needed to pay for the bottle at a special register near the back of the store before she could continue shopping in other parts of the Walmart store.
“I asked the sales associate, if I am purchasing Caucasian products do I need to do the same thing? She said no you can walk around the store with those products,” Rachel told the Problem Solvers. “I told her I had more shopping to do, she said it didn’t matter I still needed to pay for it back there.”
There’s also clearly more surveillance around that particular aisle. There are three cameras over the beauty products for people of color aisle and only one over the other shampoos and conditioners.
“Honestly, I was shocked, because this is 2021, racism and discrimination are still happening,” said Rachel. “It’s either one or the other. You monitor all haircare products, or you don’t. It’s not okay to point out one group.”
A Walmart spokesperson responded to the alleged incident saying:
“We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind at Walmart. We serve millions of customers weekly, crossing all demographics, and are focused on meeting their needs while providing the best shopping experience at each store.Like other retailers, we have policies in place that allow security for some items, such as cosmetics and other personal care products. In the case of this store, the entire section of products is under additional monitoring. However, we do not want those policies to create an unfriendly shopping environment for any individual customer. The goal is to keep the products our customers want in stock while providing a convenient and friendly shopping experience. We have followed up with the store to ensure those policies will be followed properly in the future, and to provide a welcoming environment for our customers.”
Rachel hopes to hear a personal apology from Walmart after calling its corporate stores but hasn’t yet heard back.
“The more we speak out about it and just let other people know what’s happening, maybe they will change the division and discrimination we have in the country right now,” said Rachel.
“I am hoping to hear an apology, I’m hoping to hear they will change this policy immediately, that’s what I’m hoping to hear.”
They should have a separate aisle dubbed the Steal Me First aisle.
This is the first time I ever heard of a different set of beauty products for black people. I guess I’m just an ignorant guy but are lipsticks and makeup different for black people?
Another example of an obvious truth that everyone is afraid to say. These products are stolen at a higher rate than other products. Must be a bunch of Whiteys who steal them and blame non-Whiteys.
I noticed the other day tha our WM has locked up the condoms. How many guys would pass up buying them if they had to ask a clerk for help?
This should make more business for Planned Parenthood.
This not unusual and has happened to me on many occasions. I am not black or a minority unless being Italian makes me one.
I understand the reasoning for this and I was not offended in the least. People steal and theft is a major detriment to the bottom line of these for profit businesses and they need to control it.
Walmart is not the only retail store to control access to black cosmetics in this way and the reason is obvious. These items are stolen more often by blacks than other merchandise.
Message to blacks here is if you want to be treated like everyone else then act like everyone else and quit whining when you are called out and held accountable for your actions.
>>Facts and statistics are racist, don’tcha know?<<
Truer words were never spoken.
They make you do the same when you buy ammo. Pay in sporting goods. There was rarely a line, so I started paying for everything there. Then just waltz past the line on the way out.
If Walmart is not allowed to watch their products in order to keep black people from shoplifting them, then they ought to add a nominal cost of business fee to each bottle of shampoo.
An extra five dollars for instance. And yes I know, that’s racist as well.
Better yet, just stop selling the crap.
Different skin tones might make a difference. I think it’s mostly hair care products.
” If the data say blacks steal substantially more hair products than non bkacks, it is not a stereotype, it is a trend.”
Yes it is. I have a bud who is a store director for Target. They know. It’s not only hair products. it’s EVERYTHING they can get their hands on. It got so bad at the knapsack section, they had to seal the zipper with ziplock as a countermeasure but annoys actual buyers who want to see the inside. That wasn’t his idea. The chief of security’s idea from Target HQ.
Shut up, nagger. Shouldn’t have been part of a culture that honors shoplifters and thieves.
Definitely the hair care products are different due to hair texture. I think that’s what this article is about though it’s not entirely clear.
Honestly, I agree with Rachel on this. I have seen many stores where products are in a plexiglass cage and you need to get an attendant to open the cage. Many of the items in the cage are smaller sized and easier to stash inside clothing so I am okay with this, however the idea of forcing someone to buy a product right away - regardless of their race - is just not good service. A better anti-theft method needs to be developed besides this one.
Oh, NOW I get it.
An APOLOGY.
It’s not enough that blacks have their own hair care aisle, they now want 15% of the entire store devoted to products sold by black owned businesses.

All of the theft in these stores raises the prices to everyone else. These stores cover their losses by raising prices to all consumers.
Eventually that doesn’t work anymore and the store closes down.
I think the biggest seller(or stolen item evidently) is hair weaves so black women can have hair dos like white women which of course would be cultural appropriation if it were reversed.
Perpetual grievance.
