Weekly Garden Thread - February 20-26, 2021
Fenruary 20, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 02/20/2021 6:24:26 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Very soft and squishy fence, or something. Or maybe he chewed away some of the upright pieces of the fence? I do see some of them are missing just to the left of where he is. There is just no way he could’ve gotten through such a small, hard opening. I mean, his skull couldn’t have fit through. Nice video. But even though I see it, I still don’t believe it!

Taking a coffee break. We have been busy today Getting the seedling flats out and getting ready to start some seedlings. And I have been doing some spring cleaning.

The green house was up to 90 degrees the last 2 days-opened the sliding glass doors - love that heat coming in. I have decided to try your experiment. The bag of potting soil on the lid of a plastic container. I only have space for an 8 qt. bag right now. So I’m going to plant some lettuce and spinach.

I’ll make some room later for another the same size and use that as a seedling flat for one of my raised bed gardens. This year, I’m going to plant 1 or 2 raised beds in the sq. ft. garden method-each sq. ft. of the bed, will be a different veggie or flower.

I was reviewing some winter sown information, and I have a few milk jugs that I could use for that. I have been making some lemonade from my lemon tree lemons and enjoying it a lot.

Last year, I had a pepper plant that got neglected and hidden under a cascade of sweet million type of tomatoes, and so it was sort of little. I dug it up and put it in a 1/2 gallon pot. It has grown well indoors, and is now blooming. So I’m hoping to get some sweet peppers sooner than usual this year.

Due to weather, all work on the shed was abandoned. We are hoping in a week or two that work can resume. I got on a spring cleaning bing last 2 days. One room at a time Main Bath is finished and starting on the upstairs kitchen.

Speaking of heat, hubby had the fireplace insert cranked up and it was 80 degrees upstairs and the furnace never came on during the worst of the weather. The basement got as low as 61 at night and stayed around 70 degrees in the daytime. I did finally give in and turn on the baseboard heater in one end of the TV/Computer room.

So I started on the kitchen this AM, and first thing-The front panel fell off the dishwasher. It still works though, it is getting old and doesn’t do as well as it used to. Will have to motive hubby to fix the panel. Fixing things - he hates. Building from scratch he likes. Ha.

We have 3 sinks that need new faucets and drains one is leaking-slow drip into a bucket. 2 garbage disposers that quit-not sure if that is electrical or the appliance. A bath tub that drips and leaks, so it also has a bucket to catch the drips. Two of the sinks when turned on barely have a trickle of water. Two of the 4 toilets need new innards.

I should mention that hubby did the plumbing when we built the house, and also the plumbing for our daughters house. Our house was built in 1976. Procrastination rules when it comes to fixing pipes. Hubby said sometimes leaks fix themselves-lime buildup doncha know.

So I spent quite some time recently, watching repair videos. I learned to use an closet auger. Yep, I got one of jobs done-that toilet is unclogged and flushing great. 😎

And the intake hose for the water into the house is leaking. So it has a drip pan that is tilted so it runs into the floor drain. This hubby has tried to fix and said he needed to call someone to fix it.

That was 2 years ago. We have discussed it several times, and his response is I’m gonna call someone. Reminds me of Pa Kettle.

I’m gonna need to find a good plumber. Then I’m gonna get hollered at for calling him-hubby’s standard comment: I would have done that if you’d just waited a little longer. 🤣

Have a great weekend. God Bless.

“What’s cold hardy enough to go in as soon as the ground warms?”

Thank you Diana!

Rutabagas! Sort of cabbage root, sort of Turnip root!

(One Suggested use! Slice thin & make strips to use as vegetable noodles for your soups!)

Sad! I enjoyed looking at your gardening pictures!

Are there any easy to maintain permanent plantings you can make? (Beside chives!!)

https://www.smallfootprintfamily.com/20-perennial-vegetables

Fig trees grow quickly and are fairly easy to grow and maintain! Some varieties will tolerate a cooler pacific coastal area!

Well, I see that you have had plenty of replies, but I’ll just add one little thing. According to what I printed off from the Farmer’s Almanac, We can go ahead and plant radishes outdoors beginning 2/23—no start indoors needed. 😊

Is that Romaine, in the bowl? Is it just in water? I have done celery that way, but haven’t tried romanine.

We’re a bit behind you in weather.

It’ll likely be the middle of March before we see the ground again.

😎We’ve had sunshine the last 2 days — which means melting. Stuff is dripping off the roof, and the patio paths are clear and somewhat dry. YaHoo. And it also means the green house is warm as in 90 degrees and above—open the patio door and we have passive solar heat—so instead of the usual 70 degrees in the computer room, I have had 80+ degrees.

So I’ve done some paper work, reading, etc. in between spring cleaning. Sun shine always inspires me to get things done. Ha.

I put the egg shells in a big gulp plastic cup. Then I take a glass jar that fits inside -Olives came in it IIRC, and smash it down before adding to the compost.

I have also put eggshells in the blender and my mini food processor to get finer particles to add to planting holes or sometime blender with water to add to a potted plant.

Well, It’s gonna be a race to see if the snow here melts by that date. LOL We got 6 inches, and the ground is still covered. Melting off the roof and off the patio is about all we can see now — ground is still covered pretty deep.

One year, hubby got carried away with green onions-we had sooo many. So we dehydrated them, and then we threw them in a blender. Put them in a salt shaker and used it to season stuff when cooking.

Glad to be of service! I have also planted upwards of 100 trees and shrubs so far in my lifetime, too! 21 Rose bushes added last season, alone! :)

Now look what you have helped do to Texas!🥶 🙃
