This Blizzard Exposes The Perils Of Attempting To ‘Electrify Everything’
Forbes Magazine ^ | Feb 15, 2021 | Robert Bryce

The massive blast of Siberia-like cold that is wreaking havoc across North America is proving that if we humans want to keep surviving frigid winters, we are going to have to keep burning natural gas — and lots of it — for decades to come.

That cold reality contradicts the “electrify everything” scenario that’s being promoted by climate change activists, politicians, and academics. They claim that to avert the possibility of catastrophic climate change, we must stop burning hydrocarbons and convert all of our transportation, residential, commercial, and industrial systems so that they are powered solely on electricity, with most of that juice coming, of course, from forests of wind turbines and oceans of solar panels.

This blizzard proves that during extreme weather winter, solar panels and wind turbines are of little or no value to the electric grid.

This blizzard proves that our natural gas grid is part of our critical infrastructure and that we shut it down at our peril. The natural gas network is essential because it can deliver big surges in energy supplies during periods of peak demand.

Thanks to excellent geology, a century of gas production, and a fully developed transmission and distribution grid, the domestic natural gas sector can deliver surges of the fuel that are, in fact, lifesaving.

Yup, I remember in a pinch using our gas stove to heat the house when the power was out in Connecticut.

No idea what I’d have done today without gas stove oven and fireplace. No power for 10 hours in 18 degrees. 6 inches of icy snow all around all over the roads

No idea.

After ice storm of 1979 in LI I don’t ever have a house without a fireplace or gas oven. Unless I live on base

Even Here in Texas.

Electric everything. Nope.

Actually, the Left wants all energy converted from solar, wind and hydroelectric. They want to eliminate fossil fuels altogether. That’s what the whole climate change hooey is all about - getting the world weaned off of oil and gas. Oddly, they demonize nuclear power which is both “clean” and renewable.

Natural gas is an issue in earthquake prone area’s. Unless you have the special earthquake gas shut off value it often causes fires after the earthquake.

As oil and coal run out , the price is going to rise and other sources will become competitive. It is an issue that will take care of itself. Of course the goal of the left is always power first, people last , so letting it take care of itself is the last thing they want .

Or

Don’t travel
Don’t produce
Don’t procreate

North Korea, Stalin, and African dictators can explain all about putting the screws to people.

The Left supports Iran getting nuclear power.

Stalinists lie. Always

The issue is never the issue

Climate change is about seizing the means of production from industry through agriculture.

No solution with frozen windmills and solar panels. They aren’t producing, this is why we have a power shortage today.

Price competition is not the reason.

...Price competition is not the reason.

Absolutely. The problem is the loony left trying to get a piece of everybody's pie and wanting to micromanage everybody's lives.

Give you 10-1 odds he voted for bite-me. And is a Trump hater. Get used to the cold dude. You’re going to get more of it. Or are you a climate change guy too? Then no worries right? Cold is warm!

Remember COVID19’s 2-3 weeks lockdown to ‘flatten the curve’??

I see an analogy to a few hours of rolling blackouts.
Panic had begun to set in after 45 minutes to one hour.

How easy it would be for the DeepState to implement a big ‘rolling blackout’ until say, you have all turned in your firearms to “flatten the curve” on shootings
... Just for a couple of months or so

It’s gonna get ugly before it gets beautiful again

“Unless you have the special earthquake gas shut off value it often causes fires after the earthquake.”

1906 can’t be the paradigm in the 21st Century.

CA Native with 50+ years in-grade & I can tell you they scare the bejeezus out of people with that stuff, and for sure if a gas leak meets a source of ignition there’ll be trouble, but “often causes” is in the dystopian horror flick of the terminally terrified.

In the Real World, it’s “could cause” and the odds are long enough that actual occurrences are anomalous. Furthermore, in a quake strong enough to spark dozens of structure fires from gas leaks, it won’t be the lines INSIDE the building that will be the biggest problem; it’ll be ruptured gas mains OUTSIDE under the street. You get seismic shutoff valves designed to cut service on those lines, and all the many building service meter connections will be just fine without independent shutoff valves of their own.

After a winter where power was out for close to 2 days, we replaced our electric stove with gas, as a supplement to our fireplace. And stocked lots of wood.

I live off grid. I have solar and propane. It was REALLY cold and dark so no PV power all week. The propane provided heat AND electricity via the propane generator. I would love to see a watermelon live this spartan. It all looks so easy from the comfort of their college offices. But of course rough living is having to fly commercial for these clowns.

Iran isn’t interested in nuclear power. It wants nuclear weapons.
