Weekly Garden Thread - February 13-19, 2021
February 13, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 02/13/2021 6:28:23 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Hubby had a young blue jay that a student brought in with an injured wing. Since we lived in a trailer, in was not a pleasant experience when hubby let him out of the cage to fly and poop. Eventually he met a sad end-a tale that will not be told.

They like berries, too. But I have never, EVER seen one at a bird feeder...unless it was for meal worms. ;)

P. Marvin Galt, Eh?

Beau has seen exactly ONE live Badger in his entire life, and this is a man who spends 99.999% of his time in the field and has shot a Black Bear with mere feet to spare! He ain't afraid of much.

He turned quietly and carefully and quickly walked away from Mr. Badger!

Man, I HATE Barberry! So glad they’re now on the ‘Invasive’ list in Wisconsin.

Beau’s wife (deceased) had planted Red Barberry all across the south-facing front of the house. Supposedly, it kept her 90-gazillion cats from hanging out there in the sun.

About a year after I moved here, we had a WONDERFUL patch of wet weather, and Beau said, ‘I think NOW is your chance to get rid of those Barberry!’ So he hooked chains to them and yanked them all out with the skid steer, and they went straight to the brush pile.

Nicest thing he’s ever done for me! :)

I now have the smaller version of Viburnum there, interspersed with clumps of Karl Foerster Grass and lots of heat-seeking Sedum in front of those, in a number of colors, mostly maroons. Looks great and is colorful all season long. :)

We’ve given up for today. Put an engine warmer on the Bobcat. Charging the battery. Getting a new battery too, on Monday. Took the truck in 4WD to get the mail. Impressive drifts, but old truck got through fine. As Scarlett O’Hara said “Tomorrow is another day ( to plow snow)!”. 😁

I didn’t realize barberry was invasive. Wonder if there is a sterile variety. We plant lots of it here in Georgia. In fact, I just rejuvenated a barberry shrub that had no other seedlings coming up.

Good to know.

BTW, I am planting a field of Karl Foester and Muhli grass behind boulders in two weeks. I am looking forward to this job.

Holy geez! I would freeze my lily white Southern arse up there. I can take heat much better than cold.

Japanese Barberry is a problem if it gets into our woodlands and pastures. Just as bad as wild rose.

I would carpet the Earth with Karl Foerster Grass if I could. Love the stuff!

Classification in Wisconsin: Restricted (this restriction only applies to the parent type, the variety atropurpurea, the hybrid of B. thunbergii x B. Koreana, and the following cultivars. Berberis thunbergii cultivars: Sparkle, ‘Anderson’ Lustre Green™, Erecta, ‘Bailgreen’ Jade Carousel®, Angel Wings, Painter’s Palette, Inermis (‘Thornless’), Pow Wow, Golden Ring, Kelleriis, Kobold, ‘JN Variegated’ Stardust™ and Antares. Variety atropurpurea cultivars: Marshall Upright (‘Erecta’), Crimson Velvet, ‘Bailtwo’ Burgundy Carousel®, Red Rocket, ‘Monomb’ Cherry Bomb™, ‘Bailone’ Ruby Carousel®, JN Redleaf, Rose Glow and Silver Mile. Hybrid of B. thunbergii x B. koreana cultivars: Tara and ‘Bailsel’ Golden Carousel®)

So, lots of nursery growers losing lots of money and having to destroy stock.

Wow! I recognize Red Rocket, and that’s the only one I’m familiar with. Wow!

I will research. Thanks so much!

Virginia. The power just went out at our house around 4:00 - it’s a cedar tree on the property corner. There are two - one is the neighbor’s, one is ours. I’m not walking down there to see which one!

The good news is the generator started right up & the cable is still working - my dad is freaking out (he’s 98), but having cable to watch helps! The freezing rain has about stopped and the temp is up to 32 so that’s progress.

Transparent butterfly, is a rare species of butterfly found mainly in Central America, which has
transparent wings because the tissues between the veins do not have the colored scales present in
other butterflies.

So, here’s what I learned about the invasive Barberry; some are sterile by nature. Same with Nandina: certain varieties are sterile. (Maybe that’s why certain Barberry is used here in Georgia.) I was going to use Red Rocket, but think I’ll go with Orange Rocket.

Good discussion, Diana.

True size, Bengal Tiger. At least I think it's a Bengal Tiger. Add another couple of feet in length and 150 pounds in weight and you've got a Siberian Tiger.
