I have a question: what’s a good way to get rid of weed seeds in soil?

I have a number of small gardens around my house, and I’m hoping to sell it some time this year, so I want to rehabilitate all these gardens that have gone to pot, so the house will look good. However, when I plant my various flowers, I don’t want all sorts of ugly crab grass, dandelions and so on sprouting all around them.

Any help will be great!

The only thing really going in my lower Midwest location is a send round of buds on my southern facing Christmas cactus. It should bloom again in about 10 days.

Hunkered down with a major ice storm going on. The NWS warning was for a “severe, crippling ice storm”. Yesterday was “prep” day - got all the gas cans filled for the generator, food in the house (actually, after an ‘inventory’, we had plenty, no trip to grocery necessary), got vehicles in the garage (cleaning snow off vehicles is ok, ice is bad), and being on a well, took a shower, washed hair, etc. Some folks were also getting laundry done. If the power goes out, it could be out for days.

So far so good .... power still on at 11:30, but freezing rain should continue until about 9 tonight. Temp is 31 ... hope it will make it above freezing, but it’s not supposed to get higher than 32. Tree limbs, which had snow on them from the storm a couple of days ago (very little melting happened after that) are beginning to noticeably sag.

I went out about an hour ago to put down some feed for the birds. The 3 does that hang out have been visiting the bird feeder area at night to clean up cracked corn that I put out. The bird feeders are frozen, so I’ve shoveled snow to make bare patches - put down a pile of corn with black oil sunflower seeds on top. The bird feeding area is a “happening place” right now. Getting down the front iced up steps was a bit of an adventure.

Relatives in FL - 84 yesterday, mowing & putting down fertilizer on the yard ... telling me Spring has arrived. I’m telling them to send Spring north ... in a hurry!!

Iron Dog Snowmachine Race starts in AK today - one of my very favorite sporting events - once that starts, I’ll have something to occupy my mind other than worrying about the ice storm. I’m taking it an hour at a time - every hour the power stays on is a blessing!!

Good morning. Daffodils are blooming here in Georgia!

It’s rainy and very cool here, for me anyway. You folks will laugh now because it’s 40 degrees and y’all are probably fighting freezing temps.

Anyway, I had a landscaping job scheduled for today but put it off till tomorrow. Our weather is so iffy here. It can be frustrating.

So I’m sitting in my studio with a heater at my feet, a pot of vegetable soup on the stove, hunkering down for tomorrow when I have to work all day outdoors.

Maggie

When I was a kid, we found a baby Robin in one of our window wells. Amazingly, Mom let me raise him. We called the Zoo and they said to feed him watered-down meat baby food with an eye dropper.

I think I fed that Robin every hour on the hour for what felt like weeks on end.

We had an unfinished portion of the basement, so he lived there and flitted around and perched. And pooped. And pooped and pooped and pooped, LOL! It only took a few weeks for him to feather out; like raising a chicken chick.

I named him ‘Marvin’ and he would ride on the handlebars of my bike! Then, when he was big enough to dig his own worms, he left us.

Mom calls me every Spring to tell me when ‘Marvin’ has come back from his winter travels. :)

There is a granular product called Preen, which is really just Corn Gluten. You can also find bags of Corn Gluten at a feed store or Farm store.

Corn Gluten will stop the ANNUAL weed seeds from germinating, but doesn’t effect PERENNIAL weeds, which you will need to dig out by hand, or selectively blast with an herbicide.

If anyone solves this common problem, they will own the world!

My goofy cactus bloomed at Halloween, and then with the new flooring installation going on in the Family Room, I had to move her upstairs into lesser light for about 10 days.

I noticed today that she’s got another flush of blooms on her!

Kind of exciting, actually - but it don’t take much this time of year, LOL!

Interesting thought...that Robins are CARNIVORES!

Mr. mm does that and I didn’t see any critter damage except for those hornworms.

28 degrees here and pouring rain... Ice, Ice Baby! Gonna be a long day/night...

Speaking of critters - we have a three-point buck visiting our feeders. For some reason - his other three points are no longer on his head - we’re wondering if the other deer make fun of him...

15 days til March...

Quit messin’ with me, Diana. “Marvin” is my middle name. Don’t make me fly to Wisconsin and badger you. : )

4 inches if snow which is like 3 feet in Wisconsin and I have 3 Cherokee purple tomato seeds that popped in the greenhouse. 50% humidity levels and life is good.

Hi there! More snow and 5 degrees at noon. Bobcat not starting. Put the trickle charger on it. Will wait a couple hours, hope that works. Glow plugs feature not doing the job when it’s this cold. 🥶Shoveled what I could. Da husband was cranky about going out to put the charger on. Poor baby. The shoveling was good excercise until my legs started freezing. 🙄

So here’s a lesson for me, as a fledgling landscaper: The client initially maintenance-free shrubs, so I installed maintenance-free. Then he said he wanted color, as in colored flowers, and walked me to a neighbor’s yard which had Crimpson Pigmy Barberry, which has red leaves, not flowers. So now, 5 months later, I understand he has no idea. So I am redrawing my plan with red-leafed shrubs. There’s always something.

Thanks for the ping. We are freezing. Down to -5 degrees with overcast skies, and snow has been on the ground for a week. Wearing extra clothes and drinking lots of hot liquids.

I have lemons that are in various stages of ripeness. Made some lemonade to have with lunchtime sandwiches. These lemons are so juicy and sweet, the lemonade tastes good even if you don’t sweeten it.

Hubby finally gave me his seed order and I got that placed — he has so many extras that he ordered last year, we probably didn’t need to order any for a couple of years. Ha.

All work on the shed has stopped due to weather. As consolation for using all the money on the shed(leaving none for the Back Porch Sun Room), he is going to enclose an 8x8 ft. area that will have a southwest facing window. The window will be nearly floor to ceiling and the room will be insulated—for indoor plants in the winter.

Will he run out in the cold to go down the hill and take care of the plants? Ha. Small Consolation-I am still grumpy about the whole deal.

Here’s one idea of what might have been - only for sure a bit wider: https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3603640/posts?page=20#20
