American jazz pioneer, composer, keyboardist and bandleader Chick Corea passed away on Tuesday, according to a post on his Facebook page. He was 79 years old. The Facebook statement says Corea died from βa rare form of cancer which was only discovered very recently.β
Corea was the fourth-most-nominated artist in the history of the Grammys, with 65 nominations, winning 23 times. He also earned 3 Latin Grammy Awards, the most of any artist in the Best Instrumental Album category.

I’ve listened to jazz. To me it’s like twilight zone music to appease the mentally ill. Maybe I was listening to the wrong stuff.
You may have heard “experimental jazz’. ππ
Maybe it’s you.
I remember Corea performing at the White House in 1981, with violinist Itzhak Perlman (an admitted jazz enthusiast) hosting and Nancy Reagan present. I don’t recall, though, if the performance took place while Ronald Reagan was still in the hospital after his assassination attempt.
There is a huge range of what passes for "jazz."
Worth listening around. There are a few so-called jazz/fusion things pout there, from Blood Sweat and Tears to Steely Dan and many others. Dave Brubck has broad appeal.
I enjoyed a bit of Chick Corea and Return to Forever. RIP to a great musician.
Damn, and just yesterday was the one-year anniversary of Lyle Mays passing.
A legend not seen since John Coltrane. I didn’t realize he was in Miles Davis’ band in the 80s.
RIP one of the greats
RIP.
Thanks for the link!
Yes, my Dad loved George Shearing, but little else.
Chick Corea’s Light as a Feather album is a good place to start.
>> music to appease the mentally ill
LOL... wouldn’t be surprised if most jazz musicians would agree
Things considered jazz vary considerably. Chic Corea was kinda in the middle of real jazz vs suicide/smooth jazz
I like jazz and always have AND I assure you I am not mentally ill.
Saw both Miles Davis and Chick Corea at the Hollywood Bowl in the early 80s. I think it was the Playboy Jazz Festival but I’m not 100% sure.
Did he take the vaccine?
Look into “Crystal Silence” by Chick Corea and Gary Burton.

A lot more linear than Miles Davis.
RIP.
I saw Return to Forever several times back in the 70s (sometimes with with John McLaughlin & the Mahavishnu Orchestra, others with Larry Coryell & Eleventh House, IMS).
Jean Luc Ponty was in there somewhere. Billy Cobham. Wow.
Great musicians playing fusion!
I played the “My Spanish Heart” album until I wore it out.
