At a Miami Beach car wash in December 2018, a car thief named Jose Antonio Reyes Bermudez pushed an employee and climbed into a customer’s empty Mercedes SUV. As the SUV accelerated forward, the customer ran toward the vehicle — pistol already drawn.
The customer, Stephen Allen Lott, aimed his pistol and fired two shots as the SUV tried to drive away from the lot.
Mortally wounded, Reyes Bermudez — who did not have a gun or a knife — lost control of the stolen SUV. It plowed into the side of a building across the street, destroying an electrical box and cutting power to the street.
In newly released surveillance video, Lott does not look like he’s about to get struck by the SUV. In fact, the SUV had already turned right, and the bullets entered the side of the SUV, one piercing the left side of Reyes Bermudez’s head.
But under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, Lott had no duty to retreat. He told police that in the split seconds, he thought the SUV was bearing down on him and he fired into the vehicle’s front. And, according to a newly released prosecutor’s memo, he uttered the phrase that helped make charging him legally untenable.
“I was in fear for my life and I shot,” Lott told a Miami Beach police officer.

Too bad the guy had to shoot up his own SUV and also got blood in it!
Sounds like little David’s got the vapors ‘cause the rightful owner of the vehicle won’t be charged.
Play stupid games win stupid prizes.
If you watch the whole video it also ran into another vehicle and a wall.
Reducing likelihood of a repeat offense.
Thankfully for Mr. Lott, he is in FL. The exact same sequence of events in a deep blue urban cesspool would end up with Mr. Lott doing years of hard time.
“In fact, the SUV had already turned right, and the bullets entered the side of the SUV, one piercing the left side of Reyes Bermudez’s head.”
THAT guy takes his range time seriously!
What a shame that he had to ruin his nice vehicle. :(
Why is this 2018 incident being featured now?
Did the local courts just now decide not to charge the crime victim?
I also thought it was odd to name the customer who rightfully shot the car thief. That’s never a good idea when it’s not absolutely necessary. It’s as though the writer wants some hispanic to come at the victim for revenge.
“— who did not have a gun or a knife — “ That is totally irrelevant to the story. Must be trying to make us feel sorry for the dead criminal.
“As the SUV accelerated forward” Wrong. Change to: “As the soon-to-be dead criminal tried to race away...”
” as the SUV tried to drive away from the lot.” Wrong. Change to: “As the soon-to-be room temperature tried to escape from the lot”
” Lott does not look like he’s about to get struck” The miami herald is rooting for the now-worm-food car thief.
So, the miami herald doesn’t want you to defend your life or property and it is protecting criminals.
I hate the media.
Should have charged the perp’s family for the bullet and the car repair.
Did the local courts just now decide not to charge the crime victim?
Exactly.
Leftist whining and sabotage.
Sweet! I like when that happens!
Jose will think twice before stealing another car.
Statistically you are less likely of getting shot if you do not commit a felony..or, hang out with felons for that matter.
Who did not have a rolling pin, or a fishing rod, would have made just as much sense!
That is not what I expected.
Why would the shooter think his car was being stolen? Looks suspect to me.
Who needs a gun or a knife when you have control of an SUV? It’s a much deadlier weapon that a gun or knife, especially in a criminal’s hands.
Now, if the suspect did get away and hid or got the car shipped out of the country, the insurance company might have a large payment to pay. But now that was stopped and it would be nice for that company to reward this victim.
