Mediocrity Is Now Mandatory
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 7 Feb, 2021 | Andy Kessler

Has an era of American mediocrity begun? In January the College Board announced it would eliminate the essay portion of the SAT, as well as all of the separate SAT subject tests. Their stated purpose was “reducing and simplifying demands on students.” Such a burden.

One high school near me just dropped freshman advanced-standing (honors) English “to combat the effects of academic ‘tracking” because it “ultimately separates students of different socioeconomic and racial backgrounds.” It turns out that middle schools from lower-income areas aren’t adequately preparing their students for high school. So rather than fix that problem, they dumbed down high school.

Then again, when the University of California system did away with racial preferences in 1996, it moved to holistic admissions. What does holistic mean? Anything you want. The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities defines it as “assessing an applicant’s unique experiences alongside traditional measures of academic readiness.” Grades are only a suggestion—and SAT scores are biased, supposedly. And here you thought smart students got into good colleges. Yes, mediocrity has crept into our self-proclaimed elite colleges. Job recruiters understand this.

Virtually all universities and now many companies have D&I departments, for diversity and inclusion. Sounds worthy. But as far as I can tell, the No. 1 job of a D&I department is to hire more people into the D&I department. No one ever mentions excellence.

Mediocrity? That must be a misprint. When speaking about today's Rat Party and about today's Trump hating RINOs they surely mean “depravity”.

Merit is the mortal enemy of intersectionality.

And vice versa.

I think the term of the week is “equity”.

It’s mainly the anti white racists. Communism is just a means to an end.

Standardized testing is fair and objective.

And reveals everything the liberals say about race is a lie.

Nothing new here. When I started my career almost 30 years ago I was astonished to see how many of my professional peers were “well educated” and highly credentialed in my field, but couldn’t even write English at a sixth-grade level.

If someone had the view that all the races were equal, then one would want a world where advancement was based on merit. For the most part, Conservatives have that view of the world.

On the other hand, if you felt that merit gave an unfair advantage to Whites — because they’re just better, smarter, and harder working — then you would reject merit as a racist construct and you would move toward a system where advancement was just based on skin color. For the most part, Progressives have this view of the world.

“So rather than fix that problem, they dumbed down high school.”

Demand for equality are not met with “oh, ok, you can have Utopia too then”, it’s “fine, y’all get nothing.”

Was teaching my kids this.
“Dad, she gets your phone but I don’t get anything.”
“Ok, give me the phone. Y’all are equal now.”

Black Americans were enslaved in Africa because they were inferior, unequal to those that sold them

BTW..... I saw an ad yesterday for Coming to America II. It apparently continues the myth of African royalty

It would be a good idea to find out why certain “groups” fail and others succeed. Why do Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and others from the area do well while others fail?

Makes sense to find out before implementing more stupid policies.

From each according to ability; to each according to need’

I always thought that sounded sort of meritocratic.

At least it recognizes that different people have different abilities.

I have no idea what is going on in our utopian centers of ignorance.

“Has an era of American mediocrity begun?”

I'm pretty sure the NEA institutionalized ‘good enough’ LONG AGO!

I work with people, making WAY more than I do, who cannot spell or pronounce words correctly and laugh when you point it out to them.

Library is ‘libary’ and don't even try to tell them different!

In the competition of real life, Progressives have learned they can’t win by productivity, they can only win by establishing & abusing the rules to disqualify the more productive. It’s not about race, it’s about any label (which may or may not involve race) they can hurtle which will trip up their betters.

Viewed another way, Progressivism is magnetization of a cargo cult: unable to comprehend how things really work, and baffled at how one person can be orders of magnitude more productive than another, they mistake the trappings of success for the cause thereof. Ergo they demand the same labels and capital (“end XYZism! redistribute wealth! seize the means of production!”) expecting the same results as those who created wealth from nothing.

Probably because the local newspaper's sport section was written at a fifth-grade level. But in all seriousness, highly credentialed and "well educated" are jokes. They have been for a long time.

Apple didn’t create the iPhone, Boeing didn’t engineer the 747, and the first transcontinental railroad didn’t get built by “reducing and simplifying demands.” Achievers stretch, whiners shrink away.
