Put the sauce on top?
What’s next?
Peanut butter on top of jelly?
If you want to make an impression on an Italian-American from the Northeast, tell him how much you enjoy Pizza Hut, Little Caesar’s, Domino’s or Godfather Pizza.
The Detroit and Chicago (”Pizza’s”) are NOT pizza. They are casseroles. Nowhere in all of Italy, the birthplace of Pizza, does anything remotely resembling these things exist and are referred to as Pizza.
In Italy there are regional Pizza with variations in the thickness of the crusts. But, they are all platforms for the ingredients. Placed into the oven as stand alone pizza’s. NOT in any form of container to hold the ingredients in place. In Italy any such contrivance is called a Casserole.
My first thought was ‘looks like a Jet’s Pizza’.
Checked the Jet’s Pizza website. Yup, they’re from Michigan; Sterling Heights to be precise. And they call their pizza ‘Detroit-style deep dish’ pizza; been making them for 40 years.

I got food poisoning twice from Pizza Hut pizza in the early 80s. Last time I ever went there. No plans on ever going back.
How much more joy the ignorant have, being able to eat pizza, ribs or chili any old way because they have not been ruined by The Rules.
For anyone out there in Freeperland who remembers Spiritos rectangular pepperoni pizza on Hawthorne Blvd in LA this will look inviting.
But Spiritos was the all-time worlds greatest pizza so I expect to be disappointed..
Im old enough to remember when Pizza Hut was actually good but that was at least 30 years ago. Pretty sure they effed this up. Used to be a chain back in the Midwest called Noble Romans that made these but called them deep dish scicilian pizzas.
Moved to Houston 10 years ago and for some reason was craving Detroit style pizza. Not much to be found.
Little Ceasers was the first chain to popularize this type of pizza, and it used to be very good from there. Before they went for the cheap crowd. Now thier pizza is crap.
I grew up with Detroit Style pizza, and done right, it’s great. That crust is amazing. And I like the sauce on top. Just tastes better to me.
For goodness sakes. Just eat the pizza. More proof America is full of idiots.
I remember maybe 30 years ago or so there was a modest chain (2 guys from Italy?) that had square, deep dish pizza like this.
I remember liking it.
I’m SO not picky. Don’t care about semantics. PLEASE have whatever it is delivered to my home. Thank you.
Anyone who is not old enough to remember the 70’s or early 80’s has not idea what a good pizza really tastes like. Why? because no one seems to have made a good pizza since then.
The proper ingredients to make a good pizza seem to be too expensive to use, and in the proper quantities.
What you have today is a burrito shell with a thin splash of tomato soap. A smidgen of really cheap cheese. And a slight sprinkle of dried up tiny toppings(Which most people don’t even opt for). It does not taste much different then eating a slice of plain bread.
It is hard to get excited about today’s pizza. It seems that everyone has a sweet taste for Sh**
A great concept for a big selling pizza would be to call it “70’s Pizza” and make it accordingly.
Is pizza hut insuring their locations and then arsoning them?
Because that is Detroit Style!
This article has me confused!
Who cares?
Why would anyone in their right mind characterize a pizza as "Detroit-style?"
What is the first mental association most people have with "Detroit?"
Urban decay. High crime rates. Drive-by shootings. Corrupt city officials. Massive unemployment. White flight. Desolated neighborhoods. A "nuked" tax-base.
Might as well name it "Nagasaki-style" pizza!
Regards,
Detroit pizza, where they rob you at delivery.
