Pizza What? Pizza Hut’s new ‘Detroit-style’ pizza has some Americans confused

Pizza Hut’s new rectangular, deep-dish pie has catapulted “Detroit-style” pizza into the national spotlight.

The latest iteration of the Italian staple from the Kansas-based chain borrows from a recipe that originated at Buddy’s Rendezvous — now Buddy’s Pizza chain — in Detroit, just after World War II.

The pies are baked in a rectangular or round pan and covered in Wisconsin cheese. Red sauce and toppings are added last.

For many Americans, the Pizza Hut rollout was their first introduction to the Motor City’s twist on the food more commonly associated with New York and Chicago.

Put the sauce on top?

What’s next?

Peanut butter on top of jelly?

If you want to make an impression on an Italian-American from the Northeast, tell him how much you enjoy Pizza Hut, Little Caesar’s, Domino’s or Godfather Pizza.

The Detroit and Chicago (”Pizza’s”) are NOT pizza. They are casseroles. Nowhere in all of Italy, the birthplace of Pizza, does anything remotely resembling these things exist and are referred to as Pizza.
In Italy there are regional Pizza with variations in the thickness of the crusts. But, they are all platforms for the ingredients. Placed into the oven as stand alone pizza’s. NOT in any form of container to hold the ingredients in place. In Italy any such contrivance is called a Casserole.

My first thought was ‘looks like a Jet’s Pizza’.

Checked the Jet’s Pizza website. Yup, they’re from Michigan; Sterling Heights to be precise. And they call their pizza ‘Detroit-style deep dish’ pizza; been making them for 40 years.

I got food poisoning twice from Pizza Hut pizza in the early 80s. Last time I ever went there. No plans on ever going back.

How much more joy the ignorant have, being able to eat pizza, ribs or chili any old way because they have not been ruined by The Rules.

When I think of Detroit cuisine, barbecue is what first comes to mind.

I was going to mention Jet’s pizza, but you beat me to it. I’m normally not a huge fan of deep dish pizza, but Jet’s pizza is fantastic and the primary reason is the crust. There’s nothing better.

Wow.

That’s what I call removing the old glass.

I like it.

This strikes me as a pretty on point criticism.

That said, these deep dish “pizzas” are pretty dang tasty.

I miss the restaurant where we got ours. Edwardos used to have a few places around town but they closed down and are only in the chicago area. You can buy online but i cant justify spending that much.

For anyone out there in Freeperland who remembers Spiritos rectangular pepperoni pizza on Hawthorne Blvd in LA this will look inviting.

But Spiritos was the all-time worlds greatest pizza so I expect to be disappointed..

I don't care. Make mine a Papa John's Cheeseburger Pizza!

Now if someone would make a Philly-Cheese Pizza, well ...

"I got food poisoning twice from Pizza Hut pizza in the early 80s."

I heard some horror stories from a person who managed a Pizza Hut in the 80's - he fired employees over what he saw them doing with food they were preparing for customers. I never went to a Pizza Hut since.

“This strikes me as a pretty on point criticism. That said, these deep dish “pizzas” are pretty dang tasty.”

Agree. They are indeed tasty. They are just NOT pizza’s. If they would refer to them as Pizza Casseroles it would be honesty in advertising. If you would bring an Italian citizen from any region in Italy, and take him/her to a restaurant serving those things and told them I’m going to treat you to a Pizza and presented them with these things they would look at you as if you are insane.

Im old enough to remember when Pizza Hut was actually good but that was at least 30 years ago. Pretty sure they effed this up. Used to be a chain back in the Midwest called Noble Romans that made these but called them deep dish scicilian pizzas.
Moved to Houston 10 years ago and for some reason was craving Detroit style pizza. Not much to be found.

“Now if someone would make a Philly-Cheese Pizza, well ...”

In the suburb where I live in the South Bay area of Tampa, we have within delivery distance TWO mom-and-pop brick-fired oven Pizza joints that have on their menu Philly Cheese Steak Pizza.
