Astronomy Picture of the Day - Massive Nearby Spiral Galaxy NGC 2841

Explanation: It is one of the more massive galaxies known. A mere 46 million light-years distant, spiral galaxy NGC 2841 can be found in the northern constellation of Ursa Major. This sharp view of the gorgeous island universe shows off a striking yellow nucleus and galactic disk. Dust lanes, small, pink star-forming regions, and young blue star clusters are embedded in the patchy, tightly wound spiral arms. In contrast, many other spirals exhibit grand, sweeping arms with large star-forming regions. NGC 2841 has a diameter of over 150,000 light-years, even larger than our own Milky Way. The featured composite image merges exposures from the orbiting 2.4-meter Hubble Space Telescope and the ground-based 8.2-meter Subaru Telescope. X-ray images suggest that resulting winds and stellar explosions create plumes of hot gas extending into a halo around NGC 2841.

"It is one of the more massive galaxies known. A mere 46 million light-years distant..."

ONE light-year, the distance light travels in a year, at its speed of 186,000 miles per second, works out to about 5.9 TRILLION miles.

“NGC 2841 has a diameter of over 150,000 light-years, even larger than our own Milky Way.”

So if you could travel at the speed of light, 186,000 miles per second, it would take you 150 thousand years to go from one end of this galaxy to the other. Our Milky Way is ‘only’ ~100,000 light years across.

ā€œ So if you could travel at the speed of light,...ā€

even at warp 9 thatā€™s still a long trip

Yes, and there probably are no rest stop areas along the way. So if anyone is planning on making the trip, be sure to use the bathroom before setting out.

And you just know Scotty will be bitching about the strain on his engines all the way there.

If you travelled 186,000 miles per second you would get a huge speeding ticket in most states.

Orbiting every one of those stars are orbital bodies of all kinds. Some contain life. It's inevitable.

But 186,000 miles per second is the official speed limit of the universe, at least for any mass-bearing entities.

Looks like the last of the Atlantis pizzas I had for dinner last night. The late great state of Virginia, led by Dr. Mengele Northam (he advocates killing aborted babies who survive birth) and the Keystone Cops Va. Dept. of Health (we older folks can’t get vaccinated because they didn’t get enough for distribution to those classified as “priorities”), were responsible for this valued Northern Virginia restaurant closing after decades of serving our community and putting a lot of people out of work.

Thus the Red Chinese coronavirus and the Democrat fascists draconian rules against in-house restaurant service, has put a long time Greek restaurant out of business after more than 38 years of business. (Many other similar places are now closed all over No. Virginia).

My wife and I started eating there about the time they opened. The food was really good and inexpensive, plus very healthy for us.

Now they closed (were killed by the state) tonight. We waited 1-1/2 hours yesterday for a “last dinner” from the condemned.

There is more beauty in space than in the hearts and minds of the totalitarian Democrats who are destroying freedom and beauty here on earth. Damn their souls!

Amen, indeed! There is a passage in the Old Testament that tells us God has named all the stars. That puts our universe in a new perspective, in my humble opinion.
