Many people have stated that secession is illegal and not allowed as determined by the American Civil War. But is it really? Throughout the history of the United States our government has supported the independence/secession of states/territories/colonies from various other nations.
Haiti seceded from the French empire through a slave revolt. South Sudan broke from Sudan. Yugoslavia broke into several countries and later Kosovo seceded from Serbia. Czechoslovakia split into two countries. The Soviet split into quite a few countries. The UK left the European Union. And many others….
So why do people say secession is illegal in the United States? There’s nothing in the US Constitution that mentions secession. The Tenth Amendment states “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Using my logic this means that since the issue of secession is not given to the federal government it is reserved to the states or the people themselves to determine. I’ve read the constitution of my own state (Texas) and secession is not mentioned at all. This even furthers my belief that is should be determined by the people.
If I were to join a club and did not like what the club became, I would be well within my rights to quit that club. If I go to see a movie and don’t like it, I can walk out. So why would anyone believe that the United States is a “once you’re in you can’t leave” type of deal? When someone doesn’t like the state in which they live they are free to move to another state or even another country.
If secession/independence/splitting up is supported for other people in the world why is it not ok for citizens of the United States? And yes, I know that politicians are garbage and want to maintain their power and control. So please give me your opinion on whether it is legal or not and why you think that way? But please spare me the “if it’s broke, we don’t run away, we fix it” argument. At this point I am fairly certain that it is not repairable.
No. It will never be allowed either.
Exactly.
Canada, Mexico, Brazil...?
Most of it was unconstitutional, too.
No it is not legal, but it is what our founding fathers did.
“When in the course of human events it becomes necessary...”
Who cares if its legal?
I would support succession...
I agree. California needs to be its own country. Then Seattle and Portland needs to get together and establish Cascadia. Texas should become independent. Florida and much of the South and Midwest should become the Allied States of America. Much of the Northeast from Richmond to Boston should become Megapolis.
Secession can’t be any more of a bad idea than what we have now: Blatantly stolen elections and libtard tyranny.
You make it sound like there was a Union when Washington was fighting. There wasn’t. In fact, they ended up with a confederacy of independent nations for 9 years until the secret convention where it was proposed to have a federal system, a Union if you will.
Given that the founders wrote documents describing that when governments fail them the people can form new governments,
And further rw1 was, in effect, the colonies seceding from the uk monarchy/empire
And further considering the appeasements made to certain colonies during the early years to prevent them from breaking away, without mention that they could not break away,
It would be hard for the founders to argue states would not be able to leave the union.
Of course, there are good reasons to leave, and bad ones to leave. Not all reasons are equal. It would also probably depend on what the state(s) were planning to do after leaving, if it would be things aimed at damaging or overthrowing the tates they were leaving.
We also didnt have so much federal ties and holdings in states way back then either, so different issues exist now that did not before.
Further, consider that it is a constitutional right to leave the union. Even if so, it probably would not prevent the union forces from trying to prevent those states from leaving. So we would ultimately have a cwii sitution, almost 100% given.
We have had now two ilegitimate presidents, 1 elected, 1 stolen, and now the current ineligible vp, so its clear our leqers do not give a shiite if things they do are constitutional or not, merely if they want to do something, then they do it.
Texas will VERY soon be overrun by millions & millions of ILLEGAL ALIEN INVADERS and will, in all likelihood, become North Meeheeco.
The only question is will it occur before 2024 "election"?
Wont matter if its ruled legal or not.
Rwi was deemed to be illegal.
B$. Lincoln proved might makes right.
“It is not denied that there may be cases in which a respect to the general principles of LIBERTY, the essential RIGHTS of the people, or the overruling sentiments of humanity, might require a government, whether new or old, to be treated as an ILLEGITIMATE despotism.”
James Madison
So, whats your opinion? Better to belong to a despotism or go your own way and seek out individual liberty under a new nation that favors that?
Amigo, Great tagline and the reality of Washington writing our laws needs to hammered 24/7.
Is there anyway for Texit to leave Austin and Houston and join similar people in Oklahoma.
Because theyve enacted programs that act that way
Social security for one
I didnt even personally sign up
But i cant leave
Total violation of contrwct law for centuries
Lincoln killed 700,000 Americans to show us secession is illegal.
