Weekly Garden Thread - January 16-22, 2021
January 16, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 01/16/2021 7:12:09 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Wishbones Hound Supply. They only advertise on FB for now. Beau has known the owner since he was in diapers. ;)

Yeah, signs of spring in “dark, cold January.” Makes me feel hopeful too.

Nothing prettier! Thanks for feeding ‘my’ Robins this time of year. ;)

The only ‘red’ I can get in Winter up here are the branches of Red Twig Dogwood and the leftover berries on the row of High Bush Cranberry, a type of Viburnum. I keep hoping for Cedar Waxwings, but so far, none. :(

Beau would absolutely murderize me if I planted an invasive vine like Bittersweet, though I would LOVE to have some! He spends the vast majority of his free time fighting invasive things in our pasture land with his big mower. ;)

Baker Creek aka rareseeds.com is closed down for ten days to try and catch up on orders. I guess a lot of people will be planting victory or survival gardens this year.

This looks like the same place, but panning back. In the Indian Ocean. Very cool!

The water is falling from itself into itself. The cause for this phenomenon is sand and silt moving down an underwater cliff. The geography that makes this possible is as follows. The island of Mauritius is located on a giant plateau that was created by seafloor spreading a few million years ago. Most of which is under 8-150 meters of water. Where the waterfall effect occurs there is a huge drop-off which drops down thousands of meters. Because of the islands angle when the waves beat upon the shore and displace sand, the drawing out of the waves creates, you could say, a down pulling effect. This motion pulls the sand and silt down the drop-off, thus creating the underwater waterfall illusion. Because waves constantly bring sand and weathering and erosion keep making sand and silt, is not very probable that this illusion will stop for a long time, if it stop at all.

You’ve got it! What’s next to fall into that chasm? The island itself?... I wonder if anyone there loses any sleep over it, lol?

Wow that is a nice earmuff. Looks a lot better than I would have thought. Did you do anything special to the fur?

Thanks for the ping. We are having some colder days here in Mo. Snow yesterday and today, but not significant accumulation. Only a couple of days of sunshine this week.

I am concerned about my rosemary plant. I had hoped to keep it alive until I could replant it outdoors. Part of it is turning brown.

I have lemons that are ripe enough to pick. I have kept the newest tree’s fruit picked off mostly, because I want more development first.

Catalogs are coming in fast. We now have a roof, and windows and doors on the Shed. The basement room for root cellar is now being insulated. Siding will be when the weather improves.

All I know is that it was tanned like a regular hide. They must also wash the fur somehow because raccoons, for all their fastidiousness with what they eat, are not that particular about having clean fur, LOL!
